Kabaddi is a contact game sport that is played by 2 teams of seven players. It is the most famous and traditional game in India. One of the famous defensive techniques used to tackle the raider in ankle hold. Ankle hold is the most successful and skillful technique that helps to win many matches at national or international level.

In this blog we will break down what the ankle hold technique is, how it works and why it’s such a powerful defensive weapon in Kabaddi.

What Is an Ankle Hold in Kabaddi?

An ankle hold in kabaddi is a smarter move where a corner defender instantly jumps towards the raider . Then grab their ankle full tightly. This helps to stop the raider from running back to their side. Then other defenders jump in to finish the tackle. This ankle hold technique is most popular for left and right corner defenders because they operate from boundary lines.

Ankle hold skill and technique can change the whole match if it is done right. In short Ankle hold is like catching raider foot before he runs away. This skill needs quick reaction, strong grip, good timing and body control.

Why Is the Ankle Hold So Effective?

Ankle hold technique is very much effective because defender’s attack on raider’s weak point like their feet. If the feet stop moving then the whole body will be stuck. Ankle hold is very powerful and effective because a small defender can stop the big muscle raider from moving.

This ankle hold technique is like grabbing a car’s wheel, when the wheel stops moving the car will stop and cannot go anywhere. So with strong grip, good timing and quick movement this ankle hold technique will be much effective.

It is also a favorite technique of famous Pro Kabaddi defenders like Nitesh Kumar, Fazel Atrachali, Sandeep Dhull, and Shubham Shinde. They stopped many top raiders through powerful ankle holds.

Ankle hold skill is a match winning weapon that brings drama, excitement, and unforgettable moments to every Pro Kabaddi League season.

Rules for Ankle Hold in Kabaddi

Kabaddi rules, as standardized by the International Kabaddi Federation and adapted in the Pro Kabaddi League, allow defenders to tackle raiders by holding limbs or torso (but not clothes or hair).
There are following rules that need to be followed by a defender who is utilizing ankle hold skills.

  • The defender needs to follow the legal contact zone. It means they can make contact with the raider’s leg below the knee.
  • The ankle hold must not be dangerous. It means defenders must avoid twisting, blending and rolling the ankle. Because it is internationally illegal.
  • Ankle hold must be continuous, until the support arrives and it ends the tackle chance.
  • If successful (raider cannot return before the chant stops or is held down), the defending team earns 1 tackle point (2 points if it’s a super tackle with 3 or fewer defenders left).

No specific rule prohibits or uniquely regulates the ankle hold – it’s treated as a standard tackle. Raiders must avoid it by using quick footwork, kicks, or feints. In PKL, raids are limited to 30 seconds, adding pressure that makes ankle holds more impactful near the end of a rai

Fouls to avoid during Ankle hold

The Ankle hold is illegal or fouls if these mistakes happen then the raider team earns a point..

  • Excessive force injures the raider
  • If the defender grabs clothes during Ankle hold.
  • If the defender steps outside the court.
  • The tackle includes dangerous twisting

In some Pro Kabaddi League seasons, corner defenders using ankle holds have recorded  above 50% tackle success rates. It  proved its long-term influence in Kabaddi.

When Does the Ankle Hold Fail?

The ankle hold does not always work and fails in some situations. In short, ankle holds fail when timing, teamwork, and grip are not  perfect. Also, when the raider is simply too fast and clever.

  • If the raider is very smart and reacts too quickly. He slipped out and escaped quickly.
  • If there is poor timing by the defender. It means if the defender dives too early or too late and the defender misses the ankle completely.
  • A weak grip and strength by the defender helps the raider have enough space to drag their leg forward.
  • If Ankle hold fails, defender bad body position is also the reason.
  • If defenders have no support from teammates the Ankle hold may fail.
  • If the raider is too skillful then ankle hold may fail.

Can Raiders Escape an Ankle Hold?

Yes, raiders can escape an ankle hold, but it requires quick thinking and strong leg control. When a defender grabs their ankle, skilled raiders use different tricks to break free. These tricks are as:

  • Raiders quickly raise the trapped leg so the defender loses grip.
  • A sharp twist by the raider makes it harder for the defender to hold on.
  •  Some raiders drag the defender forward using thigh and core power.
  • Fast footwork helps raider’s to escape from ankle hold.
  • Controlled hops or gentle backward kicks by raiders create space to escape.

Why Ankle Hold Still Matters in Modern Kabaddi

The ankle hold is still a big deal in today’s Kabaddi because it works. Even though the sport has become faster and smarter. But this old move can still stop the strongest raider in a moment.

Coaches still teach it because it brings teamwork, confidence, and extra points. Many famous defenders in Pro Kabaddi use the ankle hold to turn matches in his favour and excite the crowd.

This move also helps players who are not very tall or heavy. They do not need huge muscles to win a tackle. They just need quick thinking, good timing, and a strong grip. That means anyone can learn and use the ankle hold, from young players to world stars.

This classic skill will never fade. It is simple, powerful, and fun to watch.

Final Thoughts

The ankle hold is a smart and powerful defensive move in Kabaddi. It works with technique, timing, speed, and grip rather than size or strength. From local Kabaddi matches to the Pro Kabaddi League, defenders use the ankle hold to stop raiders, gain points, and change the game’s momentum.

Learning this skill  gives any team a strong advantage. It makes the ankle hold one of the most legendary skills in modern Kabaddi.
