The rising and upcoming star of tennis, Alexandra Eala, recently opened up about her first encounter with the tennis legend Rafael Nadal. It was just a normal day for her when she was heading to the academy, during which she got to meet the 22-time Grand Slam winner.
What was her first meetup like? Let’s learn from her perspective.
The Day It Happened
During a candid conversation with WTA, the 19-year-old tennis sensation Alexandra Eala recalled the moment when she accidentally met with the Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal. It was an exciting and surreal moment for a youngster; she even forgot her first encounter with Rafael.
She said, “The first time I met Rafa, I was on the way to his academy.” This was the time when the young Filipina was determined to pursue tennis as a career. She was on the way to Nadal’s academy. She further added, “Oh my gosh! I was on the way to his academy because I was going to try it out before, before we committed, I was just going to try it out for a week.”
It was a kind of embarrassing moment for her and the team since they were running after Nadal, and that too was the case in the Madrid airport.
“And then we ran into him in the airport, in the Madrid airport, and we, it’s kind of embarrassing to say- we kind of ran after, like, not run after, but, you know, we were fangirling, and then, and then we told him, we’re going to your academy and stuff like that,” Eala said.
She was confused during the interview as she was recalling her first encounter with Nadal again.
Eala’s memory suddenly hit down the lane and loudly said that the Madrid encounter with Nadal was the first time. She said that Rafa and his uncle, Toni Nadal, had once visited her school in Manila, where she met Rafa for the first time.

She excitedly said, “Oh my gosh, that was the second time. The first time I met Rafa, he came to my school in Manila for a clinic before his like, a tour- you know, before opening his academy.”
Her excitement in the interview was seen clearly as she was recalling all the moments that happened that day. She was probably 10 when the event took place in Manila.
Tony, uncle of Rafa, fed me a couple of balls, said Eala, for which she claimed there’s a video on YouTube. Eala said that Tony might not remember that moment, but she was 100% sure of the unforgettable moment.
The Impact of Nadal on Her Career
The young Filipino star, Eala, was one of the students of the Rafael Nadal academy in Spain. It was Rafa who provided her with the path and the right support to shape her career in Tennis as a professional.
As a result, she has been performing consistently in several major tournaments lately. During the Miami Open this year, Eala was a semi-finalist, where she lost against the 2024 US Open runner-up, Jessica Pegula.
Despite losing the sets, Eala displayed her strong performance in previous round matches by defeating three Grand Slam winners.
The win against the world number two, Iga Swiatek, was the talk of the town as she defeated Swiatek in the quarterfinal with a score of 6-2, 7-5.
Not only Alexandra Eala but also several men and women players have been inspired by Rafael Nadal’s game. Nadal’s influence beyond culture and generation has become the reason why someone picks up a tennis racquet.
