Elena Rybakina Wins Australian Open for Second Grand Slam Title, Rises to World No. 3

Elena Rybakina has written a piece of history by defeating world number one Aryna Sabalenka in an exciting final, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, at the 2026 Australian Open. This win is her second Grand Slam title since Wimbledon 2022 and her first Australian Open title. Her performance also makes her one of the top three in the WTA world ranking.

Rybakina Shines on the Biggest Stage in Australian Open Final

Elena Rybakina has left tennis fans with a lasting memory of her spectacular victory at the 2026 Australian Open. She won the trophy in a thrilling final at the Melbourne Park against the world number one Aryna Sabalenka by a margin of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Such a win is not merely another championship. It is her second Grand Slam singles title and her first in the Australian Open.

More importantly, it is a comeback story. Rybakina, who had endured seasons of inconsistency and poor performance, demonstrated exactly what made her one of the best players in women’s tennis. She was not shaken by the pressure of a big final. Rather, she was playing with cool concentration and strong tennis that saw her through the most difficult periods.

It started with the first game, where she broke serve by Sabalenka and won the first set. Even though Sabalenka came back to tie the match during the second set, it was resilience that would prove to be the finest quality of Rybakina on the largest stage.

Five Games of Brilliance That Broke Sabalenka

The turning point of the Australian Open final occurred very early in the third set when Aryna Sabalenka took a 3-0 lead. The world number one then appeared to be in command, turning Rybakina on her heels with her power and confidence to dominate the game.

But Elena Rybakina answered calmly and precisely. She won five games in a row, 0-3 down, breaking the serve of Sabalenka twice, and reversing the tide altogether. Although Sabalenka had a higher percentage of first serves overall, Rybakina clinched the important points of the match, with 3 of 6 break points being converted against 2 out of eight break points by Sabalenka.

Although the game was close, the two players ended up with the same total points, highlighting just how close it actually was. Rybakina remained calm in the final moments, serving well, and sealing the title, with those five games working to her benefit in her second Grand Slam win. Sabalenka has been struggling of late, as she recently lost the semi-finals of the Wuhan Open.

What This Australian Open Victory Means for Rybakina

Rybakina was extremely proud of her achievement following the final. She recognised her team and how far she had come to reach where she is. This was all the sweeter considering she had lost to Sabalenka in the 2023 Australian Open final and therefore the victory was a redemption.

The trophy ceremony was not ordinary either. Rybakina was presented with the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup by former Australian Open champion Jennifer Capriati in a rare appearance. The appearance of Capriati brought a sense of history and unity among generations of women tennis champions.

This victory has demonstrated that she is able not only to reach the largest events but also to shine under the most crucial conditions. On the other hand, Sabalenka has now lost two consecutive Australian Open finals, failing to beat Madison Keys in the 2025 final as well, and has had close calls rather than poor performances.
