Griekspoor Stuns Zverev in Thriller at Indian Wells

griekspoor vs zverev

43rd-ranked Dutchman, Tallon Griekspoor, defeated Alexander Zverev, the number 1 seed of BNP Paribas Open.

Griekspoor, who lost his previous five matches against Zverev, turned the tide this year to secure his victory. Griekspoor arrived in Indian Wells for the first ATP Masters 1000 event of the season following the win over World No. 6 Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals last month in Dubai.

Let’s dive into the match that will be remembered for the ages.

The Thrilling Match – Key Moments

Alexander Zverev started strong after his loss to world number one Jannik Sinner in the Australian Open final in January, marking his presence as the number one seed at Indian Wells.

  • First Set: Zverev Starts Strong

Zverev won the first set of the match (6-4). Having a decent start, Zevrev was confident going into the second set of the game.

  • Second Set: Grieks Poor’s Comeback

After winning the first set, he suffered a 5-2 deficit but later came back to lead by 6-5. However, Griekspoor was able to produce a tiebreak and won the second set by 7-6(5).

Things started turning back to Griekspoor’s way as he took full advantage of his let-off and capitalized on the errors Zverev made in the second set.

  • Third Set: A Battle to the Finish

The match got more interesting in the third set, as Griekspoor had the opportunity to serve for the win at 6-5, but the determination of Zverev led to a remarkable 15-minute long rally and failed to convert five match points.

However, the world No. 43, Griekspoor, managed to recover in the tiebreak and won on his sixth match point by 7-6(4), falling on his knees to celebrate one of the best wins so far.

Post-Match Reactions

Fans and tennis experts around the world were stunned by Zverev’s performance, and they took to social media to discuss one of the biggest stuns in tennis history. However, the man of the moment, Griekspoor, was beyond happy to grab such a riveting win, that too, over the world No. 1 seed.

During the post-match interview, Griekspoor told reporters, “It was such a mental thing. I lost to (Zverev) five times last year and had an absolute heartbreak at Roland Garros, where I was up a double break in the fifth. I played so many battles against him and had chances, but they all went his way. I am incredibly proud of myself for this performance and to get it over the line.”

On the other hand, Zverev was upset that his performance was not up to mark and that he was defeated by such a humiliating loss. His form has been the topic of concern since the loss at the Australian Open, and fans wish him a speedy recovery from this loss.

Similarly, Zverev also addressed reporters, reflecting on his terrible loss, “The possibility of becoming world No. 1 was on Zverev’s mind “in the beginning. Now it’s less because I’m not playing at the level that I want to play, and I’m not playing anywhere near what I played in Australia. I’m just disappointed with my game.”

Remaining Fixtures of Griekspoor

With the impressive win over Zverev, Griekspoor has advanced to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open 2025 at Indian Wells. He will face Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, the tournament’s 30th seed.

His potential opponents in the coming fixtures could include:

  • Fourth round: He might face higher-seeded players like Stefanos Tsitsipas or Matteo Berrettini.
  • Quarterfinals: Griekspoor might have a matchup against top contenders like Andrey Rublev or Novak Djokovic.
  • Semifinals and Finals: If he wins all the matches, he might face Daniil Medvedev or Carlos Alcaraz in the championship match.

What’s Next for Both Players?

With this stunning victory, Tallon Griekspoor advanced to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, where he will face the 30th seed, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Griekspoor will aim to maintain his momentum and build on his impressive performance as he continues his journey in the tournament.

His recent wins against top-ranked players like Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev have boosted his confidence, making him a strong contender in the upcoming rounds.

On the other hand, Alexander Zverev must regroup and focus on regaining his form before the clay-court season begins. After his loss in the Australian Open final and now an early exit at Indian Wells, concerns about his performance and consistency have grown.

Zverev has acknowledged his struggles with rhythm and confidence, which he must address before entering key tournaments like the Monte Carlo Masters and Roland Garros. With his aspirations of reaching the world No. 1 ranking slipping away, he will need to make significant adjustments to get back on track.
