Iga Swiatek Considering Break After French Open Amid Ongoing Struggles

Iga Swiatek take a break

On Thursday, the world number 2, Iga Swiatek, suffered an embarrassing loss against Coco Gauff in the semi-final of the Madrid Open by 6-1, 6-1.

Following the loss, Swiatek and her team revealed that the five-time Grand Slam champion will skip the short grass court season in preparation for the US Open in August.

Why is an active player like her considering an extended break from tennis? Let’s try to uncover the insights.

Swiatek Considering Break Before US Open

The 23-year-old, Iga Swiatek, recently went through back-to-back losses in major tournaments.

Swiatek, who has been playing awesome tennis for the past two or three years and has secured a total of five Grand Slams, is reportedly going through the challenging phase of her life.

The Poland tennis star managed to play in seven different events in 2024/25 but didn’t come out strong as a contender to reach the final in any of them.

Iga looked emotionally and mentally tired while talking to the media during a post-match press conference after the defeat against Gauff.

She said, “Honestly, there’s nothing like walking through because it was all pretty much the same from the beginning to the end. I couldn’t really get my level up. Coco played well, but yeah, I think it’s on me that I didn’t really move well; I wasn’t ready to play back the shots with heaviness. With that kind of game, it was pretty bad. I think I pushed kind of with my head for more than I even should, tennis-wise.”

It has been reported that her performance and results in Rome and Paris will decide whether she will take a long break or not.

Considering the series of defeats the player is facing, she would no longer participate in the grass season and use this time to amplify her strength and grit so she could perform well in the US Open.

The official statement from her team has yet to be made, but the rumors have been circulating since her bold expression of thoughts during the press conference.

If the rumors are true, then it will be the first major event Swiatek skips since she started playing in the major tournaments.

What’s Next for Swiatek?

Despite Swiatek facing back-to-back defeats in the major tournaments for the past few months, her fans and supporters have been motivating her to come back stronger than before.

As per the reports, her challenging phase started at the 2024 French Open and eventually piled up one after another. Following the French Open, Swiatek had to leave Wimbledon 2024 in the third round after losing to Yulia Putintseva.

However, the number two-ranked player is gearing up for the Roland Garros and the US Open, which will happen later this year.

The four-time French Open winner laid her plans for the year, citing that she would definitely participate in the Roland Garros 2025, which is kicking off on 25th May.

One of her fans wrote on X about his Tennis career plan, “It’s getting very serious if she’s considering skipping an entire portion of the season. I feel she is becoming more aware of the toxic environment around her and that it’s making her scared. Rybakina has already shown us how problematic relationships can affect a player.”

The result of the tournament would decide the Tennis career of Iga Swiatek since she is considering skipping Wimbledon 2025 if the tournament does not go well.

The gap between Roland Garros and the US Open will be significant for Swiatek as the leisure time will shape her future, whether she will be competing again at the highest level or not.
