Sinner is set to face Tallon Griekspoor in the third round, against whom he has a record of 6-0 throughout his career. On the other hand, the seventh-seeded Alex de Minaur also defeated Camilo Ugo Carabelli by 6-4, 6-2 after being beaten by Sinner in the Beijing semifinals.
Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev progressed easily in Shanghai, too, beating the qualifier Dalibor Svrcina 6-1, 6-1 in only an hour. The champion will then play Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in 2019. With the absence of top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz from the tournament due to injury, it is a great opportunity for him to close the gap in the rankings and defend the title easily.
