From champion to inspiring coach, Fran begins a new chapter leading Gloucestershire Women Head Coach. The announcement came shortly after she declared her retirement from playing career. She will officially start her coaching role on December 1, 2025.
To those wondering about her smooth transition, Fran has already spent the past five to six years balancing playing and coaching, including mentoring in Gloucestershire’s Girls Emerging Players Programme. Therefore, this step into full-time coaching wasn’t an overnight decision but a natural progression in her career.
Having said that, let’s take a quick look back at her playing career and how she plans to take on this new journey. Here’s what Fran had to say.
Fran’s Vision as Gloucestershire Women Head Coach
Fran Wilson, a 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup champion, gave an interview after taking charge as a head coach at Gloucestershire. She clearly shared her motive as Gloucestershire Women Head Coach.
All she wants is to build a long-term, sustainable success rather than just chase immediate results. She aims to create strong foundations across all levels of the club, from the first team to the youth programs, and develop existing resources and structures to help players thrive.
She said, “I’ve done a lot of coaching alongside playing over the last five or six years, but it’s really exciting to now step into that journey fully.” New Gloucestershire Women Head Coach continued, “We all want results, but the real goal is to build sustainable success…. A huge part of my role is about building those foundations from the first team right through to the age groups, having a genuine influence across that pathway.”
Wilson concluded, “By developing the resources we already have in the county and creating a strong network and structure around the players, I believe we can achieve long-term success.”
Moreover, reflecting on Wilson’s new role as Gloucestershire Women Head Coach
Jon Lewis, Director of Cricket at Gloucestershire, said, “Everyone at Gloucestershire is really excited about the appointment of Fran Wilson as Women’s Head Coach.”
“An outstanding playing career, a history of success at both club and international level, and a deep understanding of elite performance make this an appointment we are extremely proud of. The environment Fran will build will be welcoming, driven, and true to the ‘Gloucestershire way,’” Jon Lewis further added.

Look Back at Fran Wilson’s Playing Career
Fran Wilson’s career spanned over 15 years, decorated with a steady rise, World Cup success, and domestic performance. She made her One Day International (ODI) debut for England against Sri Lanka in Colombo on 15th November 2010. Shortly after, we saw her making a Twenty20 International (T20I) debut for England.
Her key turning point was being part of England’s squad that won the ICC Women’s World Cup in 2017, including playing in the final at Lord’s.
Not only the World Cup trophy, but she is also notable for her involvement in domestic T20 competitions like the Kia Super League and The Hundred, where she was a successful middle-order batter.
Overall, she played 64 international matches for England across formats (ODI, T20I, and Test).
She retired from her playing career in November 2025 and promptly transitioned into Gloucestershire Women Head Coach.

First of all, congratulations to the new Gloucestershire Women Head Coach! Truly, who would know Gloucestershire better than Fran Wilson? She has represented the Women’s team in county cricket in 2022 and 2023.
What’s even more impressive is that she has been involved with the team as a coach in Gloucestershire’s Girls Emerging Players Programme, nurturing young talent there for several years now.
