David Bedingham’s magnificent unbeaten 109 guided Durham to a six-wicket victory over Northamptonshire in the County Championship Division Two at the Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street, on June 22. The win extended Durham’s lead at the top of the table, while Northamptonshire dropped to third following Kent’s win over Middlesex.
Durham required 296 runs to win on the final day after bowling Northants out for 250 in the morning session. The chase looked uncertain at 107 for 4, but Bedingham and Colin Ackermann turned the match around with an unbroken fifth-wicket partnership of 189, reaching the target with 16 balls to spare.
Durham’s Chase Unravels Before Bedingham Takes Control
Northants came into the final day resuming at 200 for 6 in their second innings with a 245-run lead. Durham’s bowlers dismissed the tail quickly — Matthew Potts finishing with 4 for 77 — to bowl Northants out for 250.
Durham’s opening chase was steady. Alex Lees and Ben McKinney successfully negotiated the opening 10 overs, but Northants struck just before lunch when Liam Guthrie had McKinney caught brilliantly by George Bartlett at backward point for 23. Lees fell shortly after for 39, edging Harry Conway straight to second slip.
The pressure intensified when Will Rhodes went lbw to Calvin Harrison for 23, and Graham Clark was also dismissed lbw by Ben Sanderson, leaving Durham at 107 for 4. At that point, Northants held the clear advantage and looked capable of completing a famous win.
Bedingham and Ackermann’s Match-Winning Stand
Bedingham, who came to the crease under significant pressure, refused to let the match slip away. He was joined by Ackermann — who had entered the game as Ben Stokes’ replacement — and the pair steadied Durham through to tea without any further loss.

After the interval, Bedingham changed gear entirely. He drove with authority, dispatched Harrison for a massive six down the ground, and reached his half-century with a glorious cover drive. There was one anxious moment when he top-edged Guthrie to the boundary rope, only for the delivery to be called a no-ball — Bedingham made no mistake from that point, hitting Guthrie for six immediately after.
Ackermann played a composed supporting role before finding his own boundaries as Durham closed in on the target. The fifth-wicket stand crossed 150 before Bedingham brought up his century — his fourth of the season and 29th in first-class cricket — off 158 balls, with eight fours and two sixes. Ackermann reached his first half-century of the season in the same over. The pair then sealed the win with ease.

The victory earned Durham 23 points from the match, compared to Northamptonshire’s seven, strengthening their position at the top of Division Two considerably.
Northants’ first innings had been dominated by Ricardo Vasconcelos, who scored 187 in the first innings and set the platform for a competitive total of 450. Durham’s first innings reply of 405 — built around Ben Stokes’ 95 and Ollie Robinson’s 84 — kept them in contention.
With this win, Durham are now firmly in control of the Division Two title race heading into the second half of the season.
