“Why Can Everyone Just Have a Gun?” Asks South African Player and Former RCB Captain Faf du Plessis Following Charlie Kirk Assassination

Former South Africa cricket captain Faf du Plessis has reacted with disbelief to the assassination of American conservative activist Charlie Kirk, questioning why guns remain so easily accessible in the United States.

Kirk, 31, a close ally of former president Donald Trump and founder of Turning Point USA, was shot dead on Tuesday night while addressing a debate at Utah Valley University.

For du Plessis, who has seen security challenges throughout his international career, the tragedy highlighted a concern many outside the U.S. share. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), the ex-Royal Challengers Bangalore captain wrote:

“RIP Charlie Kirk. I’ll never understand America and why everyone can just have a gun.”

Who Was Charlie Kirk? Why His Death Matters

Charlie Kirk, 31, was a prominent right-wing political activist and founder of Turning Point USA, an Arizona-based nonprofit aimed at mobilizing young conservative voters. A close associate of former President Donald Trump, Kirk was now a face of one of the most noticeable movements in Republican activism, youth.

Kirk often hosted debates and speaking engagements on college campuses, where he went into standoffs with critics, and advocated conservative stances of free speech, gun rights, and education policy. He was a star in American politics and a divisive figure because of his capacity to mobilize young voters.

His assassination is not merely a heavy blow to his movement, but also a chilling account of the emerging danger of political violence in the United States.

The Utah Shooting: What Happened at the Campus Event

Kirk was speaking at a Turning Point USA debate at Utah Valley University when the shooting unfolded. Witnesses said he was addressing a question on gun violence and mass shootings when a single shot rang out.

There were also video clips of the incident that were circulating on social media depicting Kirk holding his neck with blood streaming down his neck. Students and attendees panicked and screamed and scrambled to get out of the courtyard.

Students were evacuated and the campus was soon surrounded by police. Two people were questioned in custody though they were eventually released since they had no relation with the attack. Police are yet to identify a motive and the investigation is ongoing.

The university has now shut its campus indefinitely classifying security as the reason.

Faf du Plessis’s Reaction: “I’ll Never Understand America”

Hours after the news broke, Faf du Plessis posted his reaction on X (formerly Twitter). Known for his calm demeanor and usually sports-focused updates, the 41-year-old did not mince words.

“RIP Charlie Kirk. I’ll never understand America and why everyone can just have a gun,” he wrote.

Du Plessis, who captained South Africa in 115 matches and was RCB’s leader in the IPL until 2024, is still active in global T20 leagues. His voice carries weight not only among cricket fans but also in wider sporting circles because of his reputation for leadership and integrity.

That’s why his comment resonated so widely — a cricketer with no political affiliations bluntly questioning U.S. gun culture after watching yet another act of political violence.

Why a Cricketer’s Voice Resonates in a Global Gun Debate

Athletes often avoid commenting on politically sensitive issues, especially outside their own countries. For du Plessis, a sportsman from South Africa, weighing in on America’s gun laws was unusual.

But it is these outsider words which made his words so strong. South Africa is no exception, and rates of violent crime and gun-related fatalities are problematic there, but the legal and cultural contexts vastly vary with this one.

When a well-known cricketer raises their voice it introduces a human aspect to an issue that is normally discussed purely in political realms. This was not his question as policy commentary, but an outcry of disbelief over the normalisation of guns in American society.

Political and Public Reaction

The assassination drew bipartisan condemnation across the United States. President Donald Trump, one of Kirk’s closest allies, described him as “Great, and even Legendary” in a Truth Social post before releasing a recorded message from the White House. In it, Trump called Kirk a “martyr for truth and freedom” and blamed “radical left rhetoric” for fueling violence.

Other political leaders struck a different tone, urging restraint and unity while acknowledging the country’s deep polarization. Security experts reported that the murder is a worrying trend of increased threats and attacks on U.S. officials.

Globally, Kirk’s assassination made headlines not just in political media but also in sports outlets, largely because of du Plessis’s comment. The story was widely discussed in Indian, South African and British publications and attracted attention to the power of the voice of an athlete to re-tell international news.

Gun Culture in America: A Difficult Question for Outsiders

The United States has the highest rate of civilian gun ownership in the world and it is estimated that over 400 million guns are in circulation in the country which is even higher than its population. Advocates claim that the Second Amendment helps defend the rights of individuals, whereas the opponents use mass shootings, an increase in homicide rates, and political assassinations as the references to the breakdown of the system.

This paradox is not easy to understand to outsiders such as du Plessis. Other countries like South Africa, Australia, and the UK also have gone through such gun violence predicaments, but their gun control policies are much more repressive.

His comment echoes the question many people across the globe tend to pose: why does America feel so strongly attached to guns even when tragedies keep on happening again and again?

A Voice That Echoes Beyond Cricket

Athletes today are more than performers; they are influencers in the truest sense of the word. Their influence tends to spill over into the discussion of race, gender, health, and in this situation, the security of the population.

Du Plessis’s remark was brief, but its weight lies in perspective. It also depicts how something happening in one nation will send ripples across the border and pose questions that will be echoed in dressing rooms, family life, and stadiums thousands of miles later.

Charlie Kirk’s assassination has shaken American politics and reignited the country’s endless debate over guns and violence. But the story has also spilled into the world of sports, thanks to Faf du Plessis’s candid remark.

He did not offer solutions or political rhetoric. Instead, he asked a simple, searing question: Why can everyone just have a gun?

In doing so, du Plessis gave voice to a global disbelief that tragedies like this continue to unfold — and showed, once again, that athletes often speak for ordinary people when words are needed most.

Amit Mishra’s Take

Faf du Plessis did not grieve Charlie Kirk alone, but he asked the question that so many outside Americans want to ask but are afraid to ask: how easy are guns to acquire? He is a cricketer who has experienced the bleakest times of the game in terms of security and his words should carry greater weight than just a passing remark. They force us to think: if public figures at political rallies aren’t safe, what does that mean for athletes stepping into stadiums or fans gathering in thousands? Du Plessis’s post isn’t about politics; it’s about the fragility of safety in a world where one trigger pull can change everything. And that’s a question sport can’t afford to ignore.
