England captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson have returned to the national cricket squad for the third Test against New Zealand. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed their return on Sunday after finishing a disciplinary investigation into a nightclub incident. Both players received official written warnings for breaking a team curfew, but the board cleared them of any violent conduct.
The pair will join the 15-man squad for the series-deciding match at Trent Bridge, which begins on June 25. Their return follows England’s heavy defeat in the second Test at The Oval, where the team lost by 253 runs while the duo was suspended. Consequently, the three-match series currently stands at 1-1 after England won the first game at Lord’s.
ECB Clears Players of Violent Conduct Charges
The ECB investigation focused on an incident at the Rex Rooms nightclub in Chelsea during the early hours of June 8. This event happened shortly after England celebrated their victory in the first Test. Although both players breached the team’s midnight curfew, the investigation found that neither player acted violently.
Specifically, the ECB stated that Ben Stokes did not see the altercation and was not involved in any fighting. Meanwhile, the evidence showed that Gus Atkinson suffered two unprovoked attacks from another individual. Atkinson did not retaliate during these incidents. Therefore, the Cricket Regulator decided that the players had no case to answer regarding the violence.
However, the board still issued written warnings because the players failed to meet the high standards expected of England cricketers. They have clearly breached contractual obligations to act in the best interests of the sport.

Significant Changes to the England Squad
Head coach Brendon McCullum has made several changes to the squad following the loss at The Oval. Most importantly, Ben Stokes will resume his role as captain, which ends Joe Root’s one-game return to the leadership position. Root will now focus on his batting after recently becoming only the second player in history to reach 14,000 Test runs.
The selectors have dropped young debutants Sonny Baker and James Rew from the squad. Both players struggled during the second Test, with Rew dropping catches and Baker conceding many runs. Additionally, Henry Crocombe has left the group as senior players return to full fitness.

Key Players Returning for Trent Bridge

Several experienced players are returning to bolster the team for the final match. Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith returns after taking paternity leave for the birth of his second child. Fast bowler Ollie Robinson also returns to the squad after missing the second Test with a sore knee.

Brendon McCullum Addresses Team Discipline
Coach Brendon McCullum admitted that the recent off-field issues were annoying and disappointing. He noted that the rules around the team curfew were not clearly written down, which caused some confusion. Consequently, he promised to do a better job in the future of laying out those rules so that all players understand their responsibilities.
McCullum supports his captain despite the frustrations. He mentioned that he spoke to Stokes every day throughout the investigation to check on how he was doing. “Now we need to focus on playing good cricket and behaving in a way that is respectful to our supporters,” McCullum said. He wants the players to start dreaming the dream of success, instead of worrying about past mistakes.
