England Test captain Ben Stokes has been named in Durham’s squad for their County Championship match against Northamptonshire, starting Friday at Chester-le-Street. The selection marks his return to competitive cricket since being removed from England’s squad for the second Test against New Zealand.
Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson were both left out of the ongoing Test at The Kia Oval pending an investigation into an incident at a London nightclub. The two players are permitted to play domestic cricket while the inquiry continues, which is why Stokes will turn out for Durham and Atkinson has been included in Surrey’s squad to face Glamorgan.
What Happened in London
The investigation stems from an incident in which Stokes and Atkinson broke the England team’s midnight curfew while celebrating their victory in the first Test at Lord’s. Both players were present when a member of England’s security staff was struck by a Saracens rugby player.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the investigation in a statement on 8 June. Stokes and Atkinson are now subject to separate inquiries by the ECB and the Cricket Regulator. Both players have already been interviewed by the Regulator, and the ECB says it is aiming for a quick resolution.
In the days after the incident, there was speculation that Stokes, 35, could consider retirement. Those concerns eased after he returned to training with Durham last Saturday. Friday’s match will be his third appearance for the county this season.
Durham Head Coach Speaks on Stokes’ Mood
Durham head coach Ryan Campbell said this week that Stokes is in good spirits ahead of the Northamptonshire fixture. His comments offer one of the clearest public updates on the captain’s state of mind since the investigation began.
England head coach Brendon McCullum addressed the media on Tuesday, two days before the second Test against New Zealand got underway at The Oval. McCullum did not comment on Stokes’ future as captain or as a player, but repeated that he remains worried and concerned for him.
In Stokes’ absence, Joe Root has taken over the England captaincy. Root has described the role as a game-by-game responsibility rather than a permanent arrangement.

What This Means for the Third Test

England’s third Test against New Zealand begins next Thursday at Trent Bridge. For Stokes and Atkinson to be considered for that match, an update on the investigations and their availability would need to arrive by Monday at the latest.
Should both players be cleared and selected for the England squad, they would be withdrawn from their respective county matches and replaced by other players. Durham and Surrey would need to adjust their squads accordingly.
For now, Stokes’ return to action with Durham is being read as a positive sign, even as the ECB and Cricket Regulator continue their work. No timeline has been confirmed for when the investigation will conclude, and England have not commented further on whether Stokes will resume the captaincy once it does.
The coming days are expected to bring more clarity, with England needing a decision well before the Trent Bridge Test gets underway.
