Milnes Runs Through Middlesex as Kent Seal Fourth Win in Five Matches

Matt Milnes five wicket haul

Kent beat Middlesex by 49 runs at Canterbury on Monday to record their fourth victory in five County Championship Division Two matches, climbing into the promotion places. Matt Milnes was the wrecker-in-chief with a five-wicket haul, bowling Middlesex out for 181 as they fell 50 runs short of their 231-run target.

Milnes Delivers When Kent Needed It Most

Set 231 to win, Middlesex never looked comfortable from the start of their chase. Milnes drew first blood early, removing Sam Robson for seven by hitting his off stump and then getting Ben Geddes lbw for 11. He also accounted for Joe Cracknell, caught at second slip by Sam Northeast, before trapping Toby Roland-Jones lbw for 17 to break a dangerous seventh-wicket partnership.

Milnes finished with figures of 5 for 31 from 18 overs — one of the most economical five-wicket performances of the county season. Keith Dudgeon supported him with 3 for 36, removing Max Holden for nine, Leus du Plooy for 13, and Naavya Sharma to seal the win with 26 overs still remaining.

Gohar Fights Back but Finds No Support

Zafar Gohar was the only Middlesex batter to offer genuine resistance. Coming in with his side reeling at 70 for 5, he made 66 not out off 110 balls, including eight boundaries. He added 54 runs for the eighth wicket with Roland-Jones and kept Middlesex in the hunt long enough to make the final session tense.

But once Roland-Jones went, Middlesex lost their last three wickets for 34 runs. Gohar, stranded at the non-striker’s end as partners came and went, had no answer when Dudgeon trapped Sharma lbw to end the match. Middlesex were all out for 181, falling 49 runs short.

Kent’s Four-Day Rollercoaster at Canterbury

The match was far from straightforward for Kent. Batting first, they posted 416 in their first innings, with Chris Benjamin top-scoring on 70, Ben Compton making 53, and Ben Dawkins contributing 50. Middlesex responded strongly — Max Holden’s 182 off 243 balls and Gohar’s 95 anchored a reply of 443, giving the visitors a first-innings lead of 27.

Kent’s second innings was tested by Sharma, who took 4 for 40, and Tom Helm, who also finished with 4 for 72. Bell-Drummond’s 60 was the top score as Kent made 257, leaving Middlesex 231 to win. On paper, it was a gettable target. In practice, Milnes made sure it was anything but.

The win moved Kent to 21 points from the match, against Middlesex’s seven. Kent had already been deducted two points for a slow over rate during the game, but it barely dented the significance of the result. They now sit inside the promotion spots in Division Two with momentum firmly on their side.

For Middlesex, it is a result that stalls their own promotion push. The batting unit showed promise through Holden and Gohar across both innings, but the inability to build partnerships when chasing proved costly. The target was within reach — the collapse from 93 for 7 in the chase was not.
