Bangladesh’s assistant coach, Mohammad Salahuddin, will step down from his post following the series against Ireland. Salahuddin signed the coaching deal in November last year, supposedly until the 2027 World Cup, but is set to resign prematurely citing personal reasons. His departure has shocked most in the cricket circle, more so as the team is about to enter a crucial period.
Former captain Mohammad Ashraful will be appointed as batting coach for the Ireland series in a temporary role. According to Cricbuzz, the board will look for a permanent assistant coach replacement.

The decision couldnβt have come at a worse time given Bangladeshβs assistant coach position is in the limelight, and the team has been questioned in terms of direction and performance.
Moreover, the team showed glimpses of hope under Mohammad Salahuddin, although the lack of steadiness in the batting department was still a big issue. His relaxed style and years of experience had earned him some credibility among the dressing room, and his departure might cause a temporary void in the coaching setup.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has reportedly appointed the former captain Mohammad Ashraful as the new Bangladesh batting coach in the Ireland series. This selection has raised eyebrows since it is the first major coaching job Ashraful will have after he retired as an international cricketer.
This is interpreted as an effort to replace Bangladesh’s assistant coach and to introduce new ideas within the system. The board is optimistic that the playing experience and leadership skills of Ashraful would enable the batting unit to be strengthened.
At this point, emphasis is on completing the series well. As this will be a test for both Ashraful and the players in an attempt to adapt fast and gain momentum towards future competitions. BCB has also clarified that this is a temporary solution, and a lasting Bangladesh’s assistant coach substitute would be determined.
Amit Mishraβs Take
It seems to me that this news is about more than a change of coach. When someone so experienced like Salahuddin leaves after just one year, even on personal grounds, it indicates that there might be in-system difficulties.
Bangladesh batting lineup has yet to gather any momentum hence, a familiar face of an ex-captain Ashraful might help the team to get back on track.
This shift is even more important with the Ireland series coming soon. It provides both coaches with an opportunity to be seen since Mohammad Salahuddin ends his tenure and Ashraful enters a new path.
In case the players react well to the changes this could be a new start in Bangladesh cricket. It is not merely a question of replacing Bangladesh’s assistant coach; it is a question of reestablishing confidence and getting ready to face the future.
