England Women have named a 30-player squad for a training camp in Pretoria, South Africa, running from March 10 to 27. The camp was originally scheduled for Abu Dhabi but was relocated after security concerns escalated in the Middle East following US-Israeli military strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliatory action. Cricket authorities moved quickly, landing on South Africa as the alternative β€” a country England had already visited in early 2026 for skills-based sessions in Stellenbosch.

Rather than a standard training block, the camp is built around a competitive five-match T20 intra-squad series. The 30 players have been divided into two 15-player squads who will play each other across the duration of the trip. Head coach Charlotte Edwards will oversee both sides. The competitive format is a deliberate choice: England’s last match was in October, and selectors want players tested under pressure before a summer that includes the T20 World Cup on home soil.

The Teams

The two squads take their names from England women’s cricket legends β€” both of whom won World Cups for their country.

Team Heyhoe Flint is named after Rachael Heyhoe Flint, who captained England to the inaugural Women’s World Cup title in 1973. Vice-captain Charlie Dean leads this group, with assistant coach Luke Williams in charge of team operations during the series.

Team Brittin honours Jan Brittin, one of the finest batters of her generation and a key figure in England’s 1993 World Cup triumph on home soil. Current captain Nat Sciver-Brunt leads this side, with assistant coach Jon Lewis overseeing the group.

The squad distribution spreads experience across both sides. Team Heyhoe Flint includes Heather Knight, Tammy Beaumont, Sophie Ecclestone, and Danni Wyatt-Hodge alongside several fresher faces. Team Brittin features the captain alongside Lauren Bell, Alice Capsey, Sophia Dunkley, and Issy Wong, balanced with a cluster of uncapped players pushing for recognition.

The Fixtures

The five-match T20 series runs across the camp window of March 10 to 27 in Pretoria. Specific match dates have not been confirmed publicly, but the format mirrors a full bilateral series β€” five games that allow both sides to build momentum, recover from setbacks, and develop tactics across a sustained competitive block.

T20 #5Intra-squadPretoria, South AfricaMarch 10–27

Individual match dates within the camp window are yet to be confirmed.

The structure is intentional. A single warm-up game tells selectors little. Five matches against players they know well β€” whose strengths and habits are familiar β€” creates a sharper, more revealing test. Players cannot hide across five games, and strong performances cannot be dismissed as flukes.

For the uncapped players in particular, the fixtures represent their clearest pathway into England’s summer plans. Selectors will be looking at more than headline figures: decision-making under pressure, how players respond to being dismissed cheaply or taken for runs, and whether individuals raise their game when it matters rather than just in training drills.

The Players

Established Names

Nat Sciver-Brunt enters the camp as England’s most complete player β€” a match-winner with bat and ball in T20 cricket. Leading Team Brittin puts captaincy responsibilities on top of performance expectations, which is as close to World Cup simulation as an intra-squad camp can offer.

Sophie Ecclestone is currently ranked among the world’s leading T20 spinners. Her place in the World Cup squad is not in doubt, but the camp gives her competitive overs after a long break and the chance to work through tactical variations against batters she’ll know inside out.

Heather Knight has had an interrupted run of form and fitness in recent years. With the World Cup on home soil, a strong camp would go a long way toward confirming her role in the setup going into what could be the final chapter of her international career.

Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Tammy Beaumont form England’s most experienced opening partnership in T20 cricket. Both will use the series to rebuild match sharpness β€” something no amount of net sessions fully replicates.

Alice Capsey and Freya Kemp represent the younger end of England’s established core. Both have already shown they can perform at an international level; the question now is consistency and the ability to take ownership in pressure situations.

Uncapped Players to Watch

Eight players in the squad have yet to make a senior international appearance. The camp is their audition, and with World Cup selection approaching, the timing is not lost on anyone involved.

Davina Perrin is the name generating the most buzz. The 19-year-old struck a 43-ball century for Northern Superchargers in last year’s Women’s Hundred β€” the kind of innings that is hard to ignore regardless of the level. Whether she can translate that against international-standard bowling, even in an intra-squad context, is the question selectors want answered.

Tilly Corteen-Coleman, a left-arm spinner, returns an economy rate of 5.75 from the Women’s Hundred β€” a number that compares well with established international spinners. She bowls with control and variation, and if she can replicate that across a five-match series under competitive conditions, she has a genuine case for selection.

Grace Scrivens is a former England Under-19 captain who has been on the fringes of the senior setup for some time. The camp is an overdue chance to show what she can do at this level.

Wicketkeepers Ellie Threlkeld and Rhianna Southby both earn first senior call-ups. With Amy Jones the established first-choice keeper, both will need to make strong all-round contributions β€” particularly with the bat β€” to press their claims.

Jodi Grewcock, Grace Potts, and Alexa Stonehouse complete the uncapped contingent. Less has been written about them publicly, but their inclusion signals that selectors have been watching domestic cricket closely and see genuine potential worth testing at this level.

T20 World Cup Preparation

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup begins on June 12, hosted across England and Wales. It is the marquee event of the women’s cricket calendar in 2026, and for England, playing at home carries weight that goes beyond the usual tournament pressure.

England last won the T20 World Cup in 2009. They have reached the knockout stages in subsequent tournaments but have not reclaimed the title. Home conditions, home crowds, and familiar venues are an advantage that comes around rarely β€” and England’s management are clearly determined to use every available week between now and June to get the squad in the right shape.

The preparation timeline breaks down as follows. The Stellenbosch skills camp earlier in 2026 built individual technical foundations. There was also a separate skills-focused camp in Oman. The Pretoria series now adds competitive pressure on top of that groundwork. Once the squad returns from South Africa, England face home series against New Zealand and India before the World Cup begins β€” both of which will provide additional selection data and serve as final dress rehearsals.

Head coach Charlotte Edwards is clear about what the Pretoria camp is for. “This is a big opportunity for every player involved to put their hand up and demonstrate that they’re an invaluable part of our World Cup plans,” she said

. “It’s the same chance for every player, whether they’re new to the team or they’ve played 100 games. We want to use this series as a chance to stretch ourselves and put ourselves under pressure in competitive match situations.”

The mention of pressure is important. England go into the summer without much recent match experience. The last competitive game was in October β€” a gap of eight months by the time the New Zealand series starts. Fitness and skills can be maintained in camp environments. Match sharpness cannot. The five T20s in Pretoria are the only real bridge between the off-season and international cricket.

What emerges from South Africa will not determine the final World Cup squad β€” that will be shaped by the series against New Zealand and India. But the camp will give selectors a much clearer picture of who is performing, who is ready to be trusted, and whether any of the eight uncapped players have done enough to force their way into the conversation.
