Scotland crushed Italy by 73 runs in their Group C clash at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on February 9, 2026. George Munsey smashed 84 runs off 54 balls while Michael Leask took four wickets to seal Scotland’s first win of the tournament.
Scotland posted 207 for 4 in their 20 overs after Italy won the toss and chose to bowl. Munsey and Michael Jones put on a solid 126-run opening stand that set the tone early. Jones made 37 off 30 balls before getting out, but the damage was already done. Brandon McMullen came in late and hit four sixes in his quick 41 runs off just 18 balls. Leask finished things with a six on the last ball, adding 22 runs from only 5 deliveries.
Munsey and Jones Lay Foundation
The opening partnership between Munsey and Jones gave Scotland the perfect start they needed. Both batters looked comfortable from the first over and never let Italy’s bowlers settle into a rhythm. Munsey hit 13 fours and 2 sixes during his knock, reaching his 14th T20 half-century. The pair reached 91 without loss at the 10-over mark, putting massive pressure on Italy’s bowling attack.

Italy Captain Injured Early
Italy’s chase started badly when Leask struck with the ball on the very first delivery. Captain Wayne Madsen got injured in the fourth over while fielding and could not bat, which hurt Italy’s chances even more. The 42-year-old dislocated his left shoulder and had to leave the field immediately. The team lost early wickets and could never recover from the pressure.

Ben Manenti fought hard with a brave 52 off 31 balls, becoming the first Italian to score a half-century at any ICC event. His brother Harry Manenti supported him with 37 runs, and together they added 73 for the fourth wicket. But once both got out, Italy fell apart quickly. The last five wickets went down for just 5 runs as Scotland wrapped up the innings in 16.4 overs.
Leask Stars With Ball
Leask was named player of the match after his brilliant bowling figures of 4 for 17. These are his best T20 bowling figures in his career. George Munsey also grabbed four catches in the field to back up his strong batting performance. The win puts Scotland level on points with England and West Indies in the group table, though they have played one more game than those two teams.
Scotland’s total of 207 for 4 is now the highest score ever posted by an associate nation in men’s T20 World Cup history. The previous record was 197 for 3 by the United States. The Scotland T20 WC squad delivered a complete team effort with both bat and ball. Captain Richie Berrington will be pleased with how his side bounced back after their opening loss.
Italy remains without a point after their tournament debut. This result keeps Group C wide open as teams from the qualified teams list continue their campaigns. Italy will need to regroup quickly, especially with their captain’s injury still under assessment.
