West Indies beat England by 30 runs in their Group C match at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on February 11, 2026, at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Sherfane Rutherford smashed an unbeaten 76 off 42 balls to guide West Indies to 196 for 6 before the bowlers restricted England to 166 all out in 19 overs in front of 21,000 fans.
The win put West Indies on top of Group C with two wins from two matches and gave them a big boost to their net run rate. England slipped to third place in the group with one win and one loss. Rutherford won the Player of the Match award for his knock that included seven sixes and two fours.
West Indies Fight Back From Disaster Start
West Indies had the worst possible start after England won the toss and chose to bowl. The Caribbean team crashed to 8 for 2 inside the first seven balls as the English bowlers struck early. They continued to struggle and were 77 for 4 at one point, looking like they would post a below-par total.
Rutherford changed the game with his hitting. He put on 51 runs with Rovman Powell to steady the innings before adding 61 runs in just 32 balls with Jason Holder for the sixth wicket. Holder smashed 33 runs off only 17 balls with four sixes, including three in one over off Sam Curran in the 17th over that went for 20 runs.
Roston Chase scored 34 earlier in the innings while Shimron Hetmyer added 23 to help the recovery. West Indies scored 117 runs in their last 10 overs to reach a competitive total. Adil Rashid was the pick of the England bowlers with 2 for 16 in his four overs. Rashid also reached 400 career T20 wickets during the match, becoming only the fifth bowler to hit that milestone.

England Start Well But Collapse Against Spin
England came out attacking in their chase and raced to 67 for 1 in the powerplay, which was the second-highest powerplay score in the tournament at that time. Phil Salt led the charge with 30 runs off just 14 balls, hitting two sixes and three fours in one over off Holder. The opening burst gave England a strong platform to chase down 197.

But the West Indies spinners killed the chase in the middle overs. Gudakesh Motie picked up three wickets for 33 runs, dismissing Tom Banton, Harry Brook with a caught and bowled, and Jacob Bethell, who was bowled. Roston Chase took two wickets for 29 runs, getting rid of Jos Buttler and Will Jacks, who was given out LBW.
England collapsed from 67 for 1 to 93 for 4, losing three wickets for just 16 runs in 18 balls. The spin pressure completely stopped their scoring rate. Jacob Bethell scored 33, and Sam Curran fought till the end with 43 not out, but England kept losing wickets at the other end. Run outs of Jofra Archer and Liam Dawson finished off the innings as England were bowled out for 166 in the 19th over.

What This Result Means
West Indies now sit on top of the Group update standings with four points from two wins. They had earlier beaten Scotland by 35 runs in their opening match. The big margin of victory also helped their net run rate, which could be important for qualification to the Super Eight stage.
England is in third place with 2 points from 1 win and 1 loss. They had beaten Nepal by four runs in a close match before losing to the West Indies. Captain Harry Brook said after the match that the total was chaseable but admitted his team was too careful in the middle overs. The loss puts pressure on England’s remaining group matches as they look to qualify.
West Indies captain Shai Hope praised his team’s complete performance. He said there was not much dew at Wankhede, which surprised both teams as the Mumbai ground usually has heavy dew in February night matches. The lack of dew allowed the spinners to grip the ball better, helping West Indies defend their total.
Rutherford said his plan was to rotate the strike against Rashid and attack the other bowlers. He called Rashid the biggest challenge and focused on keeping a clear mind while batting. The dropped catch by Rashid when Rutherford was on 56 proved costly as he went on to add 20 more runs at a high strike rate. Those extra runs made the difference between a total of around 175 and the final score of 196, which proved too much for England to chase down. WC winners.
