Ellyse Perry played football and cricket simultaneously for six years (2007-2013), representing Australia in both sports at the international level. She made her cricket debut on July 22, 2007, at age 16, then debuted for the Matildas football team just two weeks later on August 4, 2007.

Perry remains the only athlete ever to play in both an ICC Cricket World Cup and a FIFA Women’s World Cup.

What Makes Ellyse Perry’s Dual-Sport Career Unprecedented?

No other Australian athlete has represented the country in both cricket and football at the international level. Perry juggled professional careers in two completely different sports from ages 16 to 22, competing in multiple World Cups for each sport and maintaining elite performance in both.

Perry made her ODI debut for Australia on July 22, 2007, against New Zealand in Darwin at just 16 years and 261 days old, becoming the youngest Australian ever to play international cricket. She scored 19 runs and took 2 wickets in her debut.

Her path was fast-tracked after impressing in an under-19 interstate tournament in January 2007, scoring 74 runs and taking three wickets. She hadn’t played a single senior domestic match before being selected for international cricket.

Debut for the Australian Women’s Football Team

Ellyse Perry made her Matildas debut on August 4, 2007, against Hong Kong, scoring in the second minute, her first international goal. This came just 13 days after her cricket debut, making 2007 an extraordinary year for the 16-year-old.

Ellyse Perry’s Cricket Career Begins

Perry grew up playing cricket, coached by her father Mark, a former player. She played on local Sydney teams and often outperformed male competitors.

Perry’s domestic debut came in the 2007-08 Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) season for New South Wales, where she took 2-29 from 10 overs. Remarkably, she received her international cap before playing any senior domestic match.

How Did Ellyse Perry Manage Both Sports Simultaneously?

Did Ellyse Perry Play Football Before Cricket? 3

Cricket Australia and Football Federation Australia coordinated Perry’s schedules to allow participation in major tournaments for both sports. This arrangement required extensive communication between the two governing bodies to align fixture calendars and training schedules.Β

Both organisations mapped out international tours, World Cup campaigns, and domestic league commitments months in advance to minimize conflicts. The coordination allowed Perry to alternate between cricket and football seasons, as cricket’s summer schedule (October-March) and football’s schedule provided some natural separation.

However, overlaps were inevitable, particularly during World Cup years and when domestic leagues ran concurrently. During these periods, both federations prioritised major tournaments and international fixtures over domestic commitments, enabling Perry to represent Australia at the highest level in both sports without compromising her national team duties.

Ellyse Perry’s Training and Scheduling Approach

Until 2012, the coordination worked smoothly. In May 2012, Canberra United’s coach Jitka Klimkova demanded full-time commitment with four training sessions per week in Canberra. Perry, living in Sydney and pursuing a cricket career, couldn’t meet these demands and left the club.

She signed with Sydney FC for the 2012-13 season, where coach Alen Stajcic accommodated her dual career. However, scheduling conflicts escalated. In January 2013, Perry had to choose between Sydney FC’s W-League grand final and an Australian cricket warm-up match; she chose cricket.

When did Ellyse Perry play for both national teams in the same year?

Perry represented both teams in the same year multiple times between 2007 and 2013. In 2011, she played in the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany (June-July) while maintaining her cricket career.

What Were Ellyse Perry’s Football World Cup Experiences?

Perry played in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany (June-July), helping Australia reach the quarter-finals.

Perry scored Australia’s only goal in the quarter-final against Sweden on July 10, 2011, with a spectacular chip in the 39th minute. Australia lost 3-1, but Perry’s goal remains memorable. She is the last Australian woman to score in a World Cup quarter-final, a record standing for 12 years.

Perry appeared in four matches during the tournament and received a yellow card in the Sweden match.

Why Did Ellyse Perry Transition to Cricket as Her Primary Sport?

Both sports became too professional to balance. By 2012, clubs demanded full-time commitment from their players, forcing Perry to choose. In May 2012, Canberra United’s coach Jitka Klimkova demanded that Perry either quit cricket or leave the club, requiring four training sessions per week in Canberra.

Perry, living in Sydney and pursuing a cricket career, couldn’t meet these demands and left the club. She signed with Sydney FC for the 2012-13 season, where coach Alen Stajcic accommodated her dual career.

However, scheduling conflicts escalated throughout the season. In January 2013, Perry chose to play in Sydney FC’s W-League semi-final over a NSW T20 final. Weeks later, the ultimate conflict arose when she had to choose between Sydney FC’s W-League grand final and an Australian cricket warm-up match for the World Cup; she chose cricket, marking the beginning of her transition away from professional football.

What factors led to her decision to specialize in cricket?

In May 2012, Canberra United demanded that Ellyse Perry either quit cricket or leave the club. Perry chose to leave but continued balancing both sports with Sydney FC.Β

The final scheduling conflict came in January 2013 when she had to choose between a W-League grand final and a cricket warm-up match, she chose cricket.

Perry later explained her decision positively: “If I ever reached a point where it wasn’t possible to play both, that was like a really great thing for women’s sport”.

The fact that both sports demanded professionalism meant that equal opportunities for female athletes had finally arrived.

When did she officially retire from professional football?

Perry’s last international football appearance was in 2013, ending her Matildas career with 18 caps and three goals. She transitioned to cricket full-time by 2014.

After specialising in cricket, her achievements multiplied. Perry won eight world championships with Australia, 11 Women’s National Cricket League titles with NSW, and two Women’s Big Bash League titles with Sydney Sixers.

She won the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year award in 2017 and 2019. In 2019, Wisden named Perry one of the Five Cricketers of the Decade for 2010-2019. She scored 213 not out against England in the 2017 Ashes Test, the highest score by an Australian woman in Test cricket.

Perry was the first player to amass 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in T20 Internationals.
