England Under-19s beat South Africa Under-19s by 76 runs at Beckenham on July 6, sealing the three-match series 2-1. Caleb Falconer’s 79 gave the innings its base. James Minto and Ali Farooq did the rest with the ball once South Africa came out to chase.
England lost the toss and were put in to bat. Michael Kruiskamp removed Ben Dawkins and Ralphie Albert cheaply inside the first seven overs, and Will Bennison fell to Ntando Soni soon after. England slipped to 41 for 3.
Falconer and Flintoff Rebuild After Early Wobble
Rocky Flintoff and Falconer came together after that and put on 105 for the fourth wicket. Flintoff made 55 before falling at long-on. Falconer went at nearly a run a ball, striking 79 off 68 with ten fours and two sixes, before Soni finally got the breakthrough.
Robbie Bowman and JA Nelson added runs further down, and Manny Lumsden smashed a quick 38 off 25 late in the innings. England finished on 271 in 49.4 overs. Kruiskamp’s 4 for 44 was the pick of the South African bowling.
South Africa’s Chase Falls Short Despite Rowles’ Fighting Fifty
South Africa made a promising start. Nkosana Sibiya and captain Jason Rowles put on 40 for the first wicket before Minto broke through, catching Sibiya off his own bowling for 19. Rowles carried on regardless — he looked dangerous for long stretches, eventually reaching 85 off 97 balls with nine fours and two sixes. Nobody at the other end stayed with him for long.
Farooq turned the innings on its head with a short, sharp spell that accounted for Jorich van Schalkwyk, Muhammed Bulbulia and Vihan Pretorius in quick succession. South Africa slid to 112 for 6. Minto returned soon after and got Rowles too, caught by Falconer near the boundary, and from there, South Africa needed 112 more with only three wickets standing.
Paul James held things together for a while with 28, but Nelson and Minto shared what remained. South Africa were bowled out for 195 in 43.3 overs.
Farooq and Minto Turn the Match with Middle-Over Spells
Spin decided this game more than anything else. Farooq, who plays for Leicestershire, finished with 3 for 43, striking at exactly the moments when partnerships threatened to build. Minto’s figures — 3 for 21 off eight overs, barely two runs an over — told their own story, since he picked up wickets at both ends of the order. Nelson chipped in with three of his own, including the last one, and England wrapped up the match with 6.3 overs to spare.
South Africa never found the boundaries they needed once the asking rate climbed past seven. That’s where the game slipped away from them.
Series Result Confirms England’s Under-19 Depth

England Under-19s take the series 2-1 after a contest that went the distance. Falconer’s fifty and Flintoff’s support with the bat gave the innings its foundation. Farooq and Minto’s bowling closed the match out despite Rowles’ resistance.
Five players made their Youth ODI debuts across the series: Charlie Taylor, Robbie Bowman, Kamogelo Matlala, Riley Miller and Tahseen Hanslo. The match was played at Kent County Cricket Ground, Beckenham, with Hassan Adnan and Mark Newell standing as umpires.
