West Indies suffered a setback ahead of their Test against Sri Lanka in North Sound, Antigua, after wicketkeeper-batter Shai Hope was ruled out due to a shoulder injury. Amir Jangoo has been named as his replacement for the match, making it only his second Test appearance.
Hope’s absence was confirmed before the toss, with Jangoo stepping in as a batting option who can also keep wickets. Joshua da Silva has been recalled as the primary wicketkeeper, returning to Test cricket for the first time since December 2024.
West Indies won the toss and elected to bowl first against Sri Lanka on a track with a mild green tinge under clear skies in Antigua.
Pace-Heavy Lineups Dominate Team Selection on Both Sides
The playing conditions in North Sound heavily influenced selection decisions. Both the West Indies and Sri Lanka have put their faith in pace bowling, naming four frontline seamers each in their respective XIs.
West Indies named Kemar Roach, Jayden Seales, Shamar Joseph, and Alzarri Joseph as their four-pronged pace attack. Sri Lanka went with Asitha Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, Kasun Rajitha, and fast-bowling all-rounder Milan Rathnayaka. Rathnayaka’s inclusion comes at the expense of senior spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, who has been dropped entirely from the playing XI.
Sri Lanka’s decision to leave out Jayasuriya signals their read of the pitch — that the surface will offer more to the seamers than the slow bowlers. Left-arm spinning allrounder Sonal Dinusha is their only slow-bowling option in the side.
Jangoo Gets Rare Opportunity as West Indies Make Key Changes
Jangoo’s inclusion adds an extra batting layer to the West Indies’ middle order. The 24-year-old featured in just one Test before this fixture, a 2nd Test against Pakistan in Multan in January 2025, where he showed positive intent at the crease with a knock of 30.

His role here is primarily as a batter, with da Silva handling the gloves behind the stumps. Da Silva’s return to the XI after a gap of more than six months adds experience to the lower order. The West Indies batting lineup sees John Campbell and Brandon King open, followed by Kavem Hodge at number three. Jangoo comes in at four, with da Silva at five.
Roston Chase leads the side, with Justin Greaves also included in the XI.
Sri Lanka Look to Batters for Stability Against West Indian Pace
Sri Lanka’s batting lineup carries plenty of experience. Pathum Nissanka and Nishan Madushka open the innings, with Dinesh Chandimal at three. Kamindu Mendis and captain Dhananjaya de Silva follow, both capable of building long partnerships in difficult conditions.
Kusal Mendis comes in at six, with Sonal Dinusha and Milan Rathnayaka adding depth in the lower order alongside the pace trio of Rajitha, Kumara, and Fernando.
Sri Lanka arrive in Antigua as a team capable of putting pressure on any opposition attack, but facing a West Indian pace lineup on a greenish surface in home conditions is among the tougher challenges in Test cricket. With Hope sidelined and Jangoo playing only his second Test, West Indies have made the necessary adjustments without significantly altering the composition of their side.
