India’s young left-arm spinner Shree Charani climbed to the top of the ICC Women’s T20I bowling rankings on 23 June 2026. The 21-year-old achieved the world number one spot after a dominant start to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England. Consequently, she moved ahead of England’s Linsey Smith to claim the premier position for the first time in her career. Charani currently leads the tournament as the highest wicket-taker. She has taken 10 wickets in her first three matches of the campaign.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) updated the rankings following India’s recent matches against the Netherlands and South Africa. Therefore, Charani’s rise to the top comes just over a year after her international debut. She now holds a career-high rating of 753 points. Meanwhile, England’s Charlie Dean moved into second place with 733 points. Linsey Smith dropped to third place after a slower start to the competition.
Dominant Performance at the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026
Shree Charani rose to the top after a series of match-winning spells on the global stage. She started the tournament with an influential performance against Pakistan, where she took three wickets for 21 runs. Furthermore, she delivered a spectacular spell of 4 for 19 against the Netherlands in Leeds. This performance guided India to a massive 95-run victory.
Despite India’s six-wicket loss to South Africa in Manchester, Charani remained a standout player. She claimed three wickets for 24 runs in that match. During this spell, she took the crucial wicket of South African captain Laura Wolvaardt. Consequently, she became the tournament’s leading wicket-taker. She has a bowling average of 6.40 and an economy rate of 5.33.

Breaking Long-Standing Records
Charani’s recent wickets helped her equal a major national record. She has now taken 10 wickets in a single edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup. This feat equals the record of Poonam Yadav, who took 10 wickets in the 2020 edition. She is also now chasing the record for most wickets in a single Women’s T20 World Cup, a record held by New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr.
The Rapid Rise of the 21-Year-Old Spinner
Shree Charani’s journey to the world number one spot has been incredibly fast. She only made her international T20I debut on 28 June 2025 against England. During that debut match at Trent Bridge, she took four wickets for 12 runs. This remains her career-best bowling figure in the T20 format.
Before finding success in T20s, she played a vital role in India’s victory at the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup. She finished that tournament as the fourth-highest wicket-taker with 14 scalps. Consequently, her consistent performances in big tournaments made her a regular member of the national side.
From Kadapa to the Global Stage
The spinner belongs to Yeramala Palli village in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. She became the first player from her district to represent the Indian national team. Interestingly, it was her father who motivated her to play badminton and kho-kho. But then, on the advice of former Indian selector MSK Prasad, she decided to take up cricket.
Her career got a massive leap when she was bought by the Delhi Capitals for ₹55 lakh in the 2025 WPL auction. Her international success increased her value dramatically. Her former team, Delhi Capitals, bought her back for ₹1.3 crore in the 2026 WPL Mega Auction after a bidding war with UP Warriorz.

Impact on India’s World Cup Campaign

India is currently in a difficult position in Group A of the T20 World Cup. They have won two matches and lost one. Consequently, they face a must-win clash against Bangladesh on 25 June at Old Trafford. Charani’s form will be vital for India’s chances of reaching the semi-finals.
While the bowling attack has been strong, India’s batters have seen mixed results. However, some Indian players did improve their standings in the batting rankings. Shafali Verma rose to sixth place, and captain Harmanpreet Kaur entered the top 10. Australia’s Georgia Voll remains the world’s number one T20I batter.
