Jasprit Bumrah will miss India’s upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka after failing to recover in time from a left knee injury.
The pacer picked up the injury during the second ODI against England last month and has since been withdrawn from India’s Test squad for the tour. No replacement has been announced yet.
Knee Trouble Forces Bumrah Out of Sri Lanka Tour
Bumrah, who turns 33 this year, sat out the one-off Test against Afghanistan in June as part of a planned workload management plan. He had initially been named in the Sri Lanka squad, but his selection depended on clearing a fitness test at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
He had already missed the Lord’s ODI due to an impact injury picked up while fielding in Cardiff. During his rehabilitation for the knee issue, discomfort persisted, and the board eventually pulled him from the squad. No official timeline for his return has been given yet.
A Blow for India’s Test Side in Transition
India’s Test team has struggled for consistency over the past two years, losing two home series during that stretch and posting mixed results on the road as well. Bumrah, ranked as the world’s top Test bowler at present, has been carefully managed since he suffered a back injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour of Australia in 2024-25. That management plan saw him play just three of five Tests during last year’s England series before he was rested again for the Afghanistan match right after the conclusion of IPL 2026. His continued fitness struggles raise fresh questions about how the team balances his workload going forward, especially with a packed international calendar ahead.

Sri Lanka Test series is all the more important for India since the side had been performing inconsistently in Tests lately. Their premier fast bowler’s departure leaves a gaping hole in firepower and experience for a bowling attack that will need to adapt quickly. Team management will now have to decide how to reshuffle the pace unit without their most dependable performer leading the charge.
No Replacement Named Yet as Squad Awaits Update
The BCCI has not announced a replacement for Bumrah so far. Reports suggest Auqib Nabi, the pace bowler from Jammu & Kashmir, is currently the frontrunner to earn a call-up in his place. An official confirmation is expected in the coming days as the squad finalizes its bowling combination ahead of the series opener.
India’s updated squad for the Sri Lanka Tests includes Shubman Gill as captain and KL Rahul as his deputy. The squad also features Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Sai Sudharsan, Dhruv Jurel, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Devdutt Padikkal, and Saransh Jain. Sai Sudharsan’s inclusion remains subject to a fitness check closer to the series.
Bumrah’s absence adds further pressure on India’s pace attack, which will now lean on Siraj and Prasidh Krishna to lead the bowling effort in the Sri Lankan conditions. The team’s performance in this series is likely to shape selection conversations ahead of India’s next major Test assignment later this year.
