[TRENDING] ICC Cleared Prenelan Subrayenβs bowling action
On September 7, 2025, the International Cricket Council officially announced the bowling action of the South African spinner, Prenelan Subrayen, to be legal, complying with the permission to bowl with a 15-degree elbow extension limit. However, before Prenelan got cleared for his illegal bowling action, the ICC first suspected his bowling action during the first ODI against Australia in Cairns on August 19, 2025.
Following the suspicious bowling action reported by ICC, Prenelan was asked to travel to the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane for a bowling assessment on August 26. During the test, the ICC authorities found that the elbow extension in his deliveries was within the tolerance rule, leading to his successful clearance.
In addition to this, ICC released a statement regarding Prenelanβs bowling action saying, βThe International Cricket Council (ICC) today confirmed that the bowling action of South Africa spinner Prenelan Subrayen has been found to be legal, and the player can continue bowling in international cricket.β

Previous Bowling Action Issues
It was the first time that the South African bowler was under the spotlight for his unusual bowling action. Prenelanβs first major suspension came in December 2012 when he was reported by the domestic match officials for his style.
In that year, he was placed in a Cricket South Africa rehabilitation program and was cleared to bowl again in 2013. Furthermore, he was again reported during a Champions League T20 tournament in India, where he was suspended from bowling in the year 2015. However, he was again cleared to bowl in January 2016, after his action was found to be legal, not exceeding the 15-degree limit.
Thus, these repeated patterns and action modification between the years November 2015 and March 2016 show that he has a very weird bowling action, which seems to show his elbow extension exceeding the permissible limit.
Moreover, as per the rule book, the ICC bowling action assessment 15-degree rule says that the bowling action is illegal if a player is throwing a ball rather than bowling. It states that if the playerβs elbow extends by an amount of more than 15 degrees between their arm while reaching the horizontal, and the ball is being released, the delivery is considered illegal bowling action. Match officials and referees use their experience and naked eye to decide whether the bowling action is illegal or not.

Amit Mishraβs Take
As a cricket follower, I am very happy for Prenelan Subrayen getting cleared for his illegal bowling action, as I have always believed his action to be legal, despite the speculations. With the amount of talent he carries on the field, it has to be someday his actions being reported and questioned by the media and match officials.
I am looking forward to his upcoming matches since his action has been declared legal by the ICC itself.
