Former New Zealand captain Amy Satterthwaite has taken charge as head coach of Canterbury Women ahead of the upcoming domestic season. The appointment makes her the only female head coach among domestic sides in New Zealand this summer.
Satterthwaite Returns to Canterbury in New Coaching Role
Satterthwaite last represented Canterbury during the 2022-23 Hallyburton Johnstone Shield season before she stepped away as a player. She takes over from Rhys Morgan, who guided the team for six years and delivered two Super Smash titles, in 2020-21 and 2022-23, along with the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield crown in 2020-21. Canterbury will look to build on that success under Satterthwaite’s leadership this season.
Satterthwaite retired from international cricket in 2022 and moved into coaching soon after, joining Adelaide Strikers in the WBBL as assistant coach. She then retired from domestic cricket in New Zealand following the 2022-23 season. Canterbury appointed her as female pathway lead in December last year, a role that positioned her for this latest promotion.
A Playing Career Built on Consistency and Records
Satterthwaite finished her playing days at Canterbury as the franchise’s leading run-scorer overall, with 5147 runs across two decades on the domestic circuit. Frankie Mackay has since passed that tally, but Satterthwaite still holds the record for most T20 runs at the franchise, with 2925 to her name.
At the international level, Satterthwaite spent 15 years as a mainstay of the New Zealand dressing room. She played 145 ODIs and 111 T20Is during that period. She also holds a rare distinction in the format, remaining the only woman, and one of just two players overall alongside Kumar Sangakkara, to score four consecutive ODI centuries.
Canterbury Also Names New Men’s Head Coach

Alongside Satterthwaite’s appointment, Canterbury confirmed Brendon Donkers as head coach of the men’s team, the defending Plunket Shield champions. Donkers previously served as assistant coach under Peter Fulton, who departed midway through last season after accepting the head coach position at Middlesex. Donkers stepped in as interim head coach following Fulton’s exit and has now been confirmed in the role on a full-time basis.
The coaching changes extend beyond Canterbury as well. Heinrich Malan has returned to New Zealand domestic cricket to take over as head coach of Central Districts, signing a three-year deal that begins this month. Malan replaces Greg Hay, who led the side through the four-day Plunket Shield and the one-day Ford Trophy, and Ben Smith, who oversaw the Super Smash campaign.
Malan previously coached Central Districts to two Plunket Shield titles and a Ford Trophy win, along with the 2019 Super Smash title. He also had a spell coaching Auckland before spending four years as head coach of Ireland. Malan left the Ireland role a day after guiding the team to a historic 2-0 T20I series win over India.
“I’m looking forward to getting to know the newer faces there,” Malan said in a statement, adding that working hands-on with players at domestic level remains something that excites him heading into the new season.
With three head coach appointments confirmed across two franchises, New Zealand domestic cricket enters the new season with a notably refreshed coaching landscape.
