Abdur Razzak Quits as Selector, Eyes Bigger Stage

Abdur Razzak submitted his nomination to contest as a director candidate from the Khulna Division. In January 2021, he was added to the selection committee and soon emerged as a respected voice there. He had the credibility of making balanced and player friendly decisions because of his experience as an international cricketer representing Bangladesh over 14 years. Many admired how Abdur Razzak brought a player’s perspective into team selections, something not every selector could always offer.

Abdur Razzak looked back upon his journey in his farewell statement. He claimed that he had spent more than 10 years on the field and more than four years in the selection room and it was time to retire and serve in a wider scope.
His words were an indication of a strong ambition to make a difference in the selection of teams in Bangladesh not only by policies but also by making the sport an administrative affair through the BCB Elections.
His departure also creates a vacuum in the existing selection panel. The BCB will now have to seek an individual capable of matching his knowledge of the game and relations with players. This demonstrates that the board is ever changing and new faces are seeking to integrate cricketing experience with leadership roles. The BCB Elections will play a critical role in that direction.
Amit Mishra’s Take
Abdur Razzak’s decision to step down as selector before contesting in the BCB Elections feels bold and honest. He did not have a conflict of interest since he resigned first and demonstrated that he cares more about fairness.
It also reveals that he is not satisfied with his position remaining in the background but he desires to be involved more in the future of the game. His experience as a player and a selector provides him with a solid platform to take part at the policy making level where key decisions related to Bangladesh cricket are taken.
Nevertheless, it will not come without challenges. The BCB Elections are competitive, and are usually affected by alliances and power struggles. To succeed, Abdur Razzak will require good support and clear ideas.
Despite the difficulty of the task, his action represents a more significant shift in cricket’s leadership. Coaches and commentators are no longer the only options for former players. Now, they wish to take on the role of administrator and run the sport from the boardroom. That new wave includes Abdur Razzak‘s leap and it will be interesting to watch how far he can go.
