Seems like the Asia Cup Trophy Dispute between India and Pakistan is finally going to be resolved. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said recently that there have been positive discussions going on with PCB chairman and ACC president Mohsin Naqvi, and both parties are hopeful of finding a common solution soon.
He claimed, “The ice has been broken,” after months of silence and tension. Cricket diplomacy may soon put an end to the dispute that has cast a shadow over the regional tournament since September.
How the Asia Cup Trophy Dispute Started?
It started after an emphatic win by India over Pakistan by five wickets in the 2025 Asia Cup final at the Dubai International Stadium. The fans celebrated the thrilling victory, but during the trophy presentation, the Indian team declined to accept it from Mohsin Naqvi, the ACC President and Interior Minister of Pakistan.
The refusal was connected with the rising political tension between the two countries in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025. The presentation was thus delayed for more than an hour. But the Asia Cup trophy dispute flame burned higher when Naqvi took away the trophy, leaving everyone disappointed.
Since then the original trophy is in the ACC’s Dubai headquarters pending the resolution of the ongoing dispute. Therefore, this cast a shadow over what should have been a joyful moment of Indian cricket.
BCCI, PCB, and ACC Step Toward Resolution
Devajit Saikia and Mohsin Naqvi held informal talks on the sidelines of a recent ICC meeting in Dubai.
“It was really good to start the process of negotiation. Both sides will work out something to solve the issue at the earliest. The ice has been broken now,” Saikia said later.
Speaking about the Asia Cup Trophy dispute, Saikia added, “Yesterday, there were two meetings; an informal board meeting followed by the formal ICC board meeting. All board directors, including representatives from India and Pakistan, were present.”
He added, “The agenda did not include the Asia Cup controversy, so it wasn’t discussed officially. But at our request, the ICC facilitated an off-the-board discussion between India and Pakistan in the presence of senior ICC board directors.”
This development sends hopeful signals that the Asia Cup Trophy dispute will be sorted out amicably. Sources close to the ACC indicate that the official handing over ceremony could take place later this year, possibly at another ACC event, ensuring that India will receive the trophy they rightfully won.
The Asian Cricket Council will probably intervene between the two boards so that there stays no further political unease, keeping the sportsman’s spirit alive .
Amit Mishra’s Take
The Asia Cup Trophy dispute sprouted from a whole lot of gestures, denials to shake hands and not to forget pride associated with winning such a marquee event. Naturally, emotions ran high, but it was good to see both BCCI and PCB retreat backstage and engage constructively.
If handled wisely, this can be a new example in cricket diplomacy in Asia. The Asia Cup, when next held, would hopefully be remembered for great cricket, broken records not controversy. Well maybe a little bit of scandal is fine in sports, but leaving empty handed after winning a title kind of situation, should be best avoided.
