A former England international is under investigation after two women alleged their drinks were spiked at a London pub co-owned by high-profile sporting figures. One of the women has also accused the man of sexual assault.
In light of the incident, the Metropolitan Police confirmed they interviewed a man in his 40s under caution on June 5, 2025, however, no arrests have been made, and enquiries are ongoing.
What happened at the Cricket-Themed Cafe, Boundary?
The alleged spiking occurred on 22 May at The Boundary, a cricket-themed pub in Chelsea which opened in March and has quickly become a popular late-night spot for players and fans.
The venue is co-owned by several current and former sports figures, including England head coach Brendon McCullum, white-ball captain Jos Buttler, World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan, ex-England batter Sam Billings, former South Africa skipper Graeme Smith, Ireland’s Paul Stirling, and England rugby union hooker Jamie George.
According to reports, none of the owners were present on the night of the alleged incident, which coincided with the opening day of England’s one-off Test match against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge.
Moreover, the Metropolitan Police confirmed that a man in his 40s, identified as a former England cricketer, was interviewed under caution in June.
In a statement released to the Daily Telegraph, police said:
“Two women are believed to have been spiked with one also allegedly sexually assaulted. A man in his 40s was interviewed under caution on Thursday, June 5. Enquiries remain ongoing and no arrests have been made at this stage.”
At present, no charges have been filed, and the man remains unnamed.
According to UK law, an interview under caution refers to the act of police having enough reason to interrogate the suspect but it does not amount to an arrest. The interview is admissible evidence if charges follow.
Once the police finish their investigations, the case will not proceed further unless the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is convinced that they have sufficient evidence to proceed with charges. Until then, the presumption of innocence applies.

ECB’s Awareness And Silence
Due to the connection of the pub with the high-ranking officials in the English cricketing boards, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is reported to have long known about the allegations.
Observers believe the case could raise awkward questions for the board, particularly with the high-profile Ashes tour scheduled later this year.
The sport has faced increasing scrutiny over its handling of safeguarding and misconduct cases in recent years.
Only weeks ago, the ECB’s Cricket Discipline Panel suspended a former county coach for nine months after he admitted to sending sexually explicit pictures to two female junior staff. His name was withheld on the grounds that disclosure posed a “serious risk of harm.”
Last November, another professional coach was banned for six months for “inappropriate sexual behaviour” on a pre-season tour involving men’s and women’s county players.
Such cases have fuelled criticism that the sport’s culture has not adequately addressed misconduct and accountability.
Drink-Spiking: A Broader UK Concern
The case has also raised the issue of increased concern of drink-spiking in the UK. Such cases have been reported to be on the rise by police and campaign groups especially in the night life venues.
The Home Office cautions that the spiking is usually characterized by the fact that sedatives or alcohol is spiked in drinks without being detected, and consequently the victims end up being disoriented or rendered incapacitated. Campaigners emphasize that individuals need to be more vigilant but venues and authorities should be responsible to guarantee safety and responsibility.
Reputation At Stake For Cricket
The charges have the potential of damaging the reputation of English cricket. The case could be subject to criticism by fans and sponsors with top officials in the pub and the ECB already under pressure due to previous disciplinary failures.
Cricket administrators have promised stronger safeguarding frameworks in recent years. However, campaigners argue that incidents like these show how much work still needs to be done to protect women and restore public trust.
Wrapping Up
The case of an former England cricketer who has been accused of drink-spiking and sexual assault is yet to be charged, but its effect is already being felt. As one of the newest facilities in the sport, the centre of the allegations, and the ECB under new scrutiny, the case is more than a legal fight, but also the test of whether or not the sport is prioritizing safety and responsibility.
For now, police inquiries continue, and the future of the individual involved remains uncertain. But for English cricket, the fallout may last much longer.
Amit Mishra’s Take
Stories like this are hard to process, because they remind us that sport doesn’t exist in a bubble. Cricket is admired because of its ability, its competitions, its tradition but what goes on, off-the-field is equally important.
The fact that two women’s drinks were allegedly spiked with one of them saying she was assaulted is not just a simple police report but a wake-up call as to how safe it is within areas surrounding the game. It is more disturbing that a former England cricketer is being investigated.
In the case of cricket, silence will be inadequate. Fans, players and communities should be given transparency, accountability and the guarantee that the sport cares about people and not just their reputation.
