A big blow for the New Zealand cricket team and fans around the world, as fast bowler Kyle Jamieson has been ruled out of the three-match NZ vs ENG ODI series happening from Sunday. According to the reports published by New Zealand Cricket (NZC), Jamieson experienced side stiffness in his left segment during the training session at Bay Oval, the venue for the first ODI in Mount Maunganui.
Kyle Jamieson Missing NZ vs ENG ODI Series
Ahead of the NZ vs ENG three-match ODI series, New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Jamieson has been ruled out due to side stiffness. Just a day before the series opener, the 30-year-old pacer complained of discomfort in his left side while he was training at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Saturday.
The New Zealand team management was not keen to take chances, considering that Kyle Jamieson has had a long history of injuries with several stress fractures on the back and a back surgery. Head coach Rob Walter has assured that the absence of Jamieson is more of a precautionary move, which gives him time to rest well enough and be fit to play the West Indies series beginning November 5 in Auckland.
Following the incident just before the NZ vs ENG ODI, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) issued a statement saying, “Kyle felt a little sore on the side after bowling today, and we were not going to run any chances at this point in the summer.” Walter said that more time was needed before he could be taken out in this one-day series and that he therefore felt it was best he sat out.

Jamieson will go back to Christchurch to be assessed more. The announcement was made by NZC saying that his successor will be named after the first round of the Ford Trophy, the 1-day domestic competition in New Zealand, which will be staged this weekend.

Kyle Jamieson has been suffering recurrent injuries since his sensational debut and star performance in the final of the World Test Championship against India in 2021. In 2022 and 2023, he was out of action due to a back stress fracture and another. His potential notwithstanding, his career progress has been frequently stopped by injuries, and influenced his performance in different formats.
In recent times, Kyle Jamieson returned to the national set-up, and he took three wickets in two T20Is against England, but his economy rate was quite high at 9.25. High-performance professionals, Chelsea Lane and Matt Dallow, have assisted him in maintaining his workload by ensuring that he tracks his bowling loads, gym sessions, and recovery schedule.
Jamieson also mentioned that he is very aware of his physical state by stating that he has reflection and review processes after every couple of days when he bowls. He said, “I’m pretty much fully through them at the moment, and then apply it into the different cricket environments that I end up in.”
Amit Mishra’s Perspective
From the writer’s point of view, the injury scare Kyle Jamieson suffered just ahead of the NZ vs ENG ODI series is something that disappointed cricket fans like me. With the potential and energy he brings on the ground and his ability to contribute to the team when needed the most is what New Zealand cricket team will miss him in the NZ vs ENG ODI match happening on October 26. I hope he recovers well and quickly so we can witness his action in the upcoming clash against the West Indies, starting from November 5 in Auckland.
