Imagine being 17, smashing 94 runs in a chase at Chinnaswamy. Well, young cricketer Ayush Mhatre has made a name for himself with his skill and class.
However, the journey for the 17 year old batter wasn’t easy. His batting might be the talking point, but his personal life is something that will always be a key talking point. Let’s know in detail about this teenager.
Ayush Mhatre’s IPL Career
Following the poor form of batters like Rahul Tripathi, Devon Conway, and Rachin Ravindra, Ayush Mhatre made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Match 38 of the 2025 season, played against the Mumbai Indians (MI) on April 20, 2025, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Being the youngest batter in IPL history for Chennai Super Kings, Mhatre made a name for himself. He has played in 4 matches and made 163 runs with the bat.
For a 17 year old, this stat is highly impressive. He has a strike rate of 185.23 and provides the necessary impetus right at the start of the innings. It’s fair to say Mhatre is the find for the future.
Struggles of Ayush Mhatre
A lot of the readers might not be aware, but Ayush Mhatre is a big fan of Rohit Sharma. During his earliest days as a cricketer, Ayush had faced plenty of challenges. He used to travel 6 hours just to get to the ground to practice and improve his skills.
His father, Yogesh Mhatre, accompanied him during the matches. Even though Yogesh was a banker, he had ample support for his son. Yogesh even left his job as a banker to support his son.
Ayush Mhatre hails from a middle-class background, and his father’s decision to leave his job to support his son’s cricketing journey stands as a remarkable act of faith, dedication, and commitment to Ayush’s talent.
Ayush Mhatre’s Depression Issues
Yes, the 17-year-old has had depression along with overweight problems. According to Prashant Shetty, the first coach of Ayush, he went into a state of depression when he wasn’t picked for the Top 30 NCA players.
Later, his coach Prashant set the barrier of scoring 300 runs in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, which Ayush achieved easily. Mhatre worked hard on his technique, fitness, and later got called for the KACA tournament.
The performance of scoring 51 in the first match of the tournament, and not being happy with the score, made Prashant realize that Ayush had matured as a player.
Achievement as a 17-year-old
Well, Ayush Mhatre is just 17 years old, but his achievement has been brilliant. Once dropped from the NCA 30-player list, Ayush has made a mark for himself, and got selected for the Irani Trophy, Ranji Trophy, India U-19 team, and now, the IPL.
Chennai Super Kings first caught the attention of the batter when he made 181 runs from 117 balls in Mumbai’s match against Nagaland.
Looking at the performance of Ayush in the Ranji trophy setup, he was called by Mumbai and Chennai for the trials. As Ruturaj Gaikwad got injured, CSK saw the opportunity and roped in Ayush Mhatre to their playing XI, and the rest is history.
