England selectors have named Sussex all-rounder James Coles in a 17-man squad for the upcoming T20I series against India. The 22-year-old earns his first senior international call-up after several years of excellent performances in domestic cricket. Harry Brook will lead the side as captain for the five-match series, which begins on July 1 at Chester-le-Street.
The selection of James Coles follows his record-breaking move in The Hundred auction, where London Spirit signed him for £390,000. Consequently, he became the most expensive player in the history of the competition’s inaugural auction. National selector Marcus North described Coles as an exciting addition who earned his place through performances with the England Lions.
James Coles Joins England T20I Squad for India Tour
James Coles is an all-rounder who can bat in the top order and bowl left-arm orthodox spin. He recently made headlines by scoring a career-best 224 not out for Sussex against Glamorgan in the County Championship. His massive innings included 11 sixes and 14 boundaries.
Additionally, Coles proved himself in short-format cricket. Last season, he scored 397 runs in the T20 Blast at an average of 33. He also took 10 wickets with an economy rate of just over nine. Meanwhile, his performances for Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 competition helped his team reach the final. During that tournament, he scored 152 runs with a high strike rate of 170.78.

Who is James Coles?
James Coles was born in Aylesbury and started playing cricket for local clubs at a very young age. He joined the Sussex cricket pathway when he was only 12 years old. In 2020, he made history by becoming the youngest-ever first-class debutant for Sussex at age 16 years and 157 days.
Additionally, Coles attended Magdalen College School in Oxford. While there, he won the Sir John ‘Jack’ Hobbs Silver Jubilee Memorial Prize for being the most outstanding under-16 schoolboy cricketer in England. He later represented England at the 2022 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. His rapid rise continued when he was named Sussex’s Men’s Red-Ball and White-Ball Player of the Year in 2024.
He has scored over 1,000 runs in T20 cricket with five half-centuries. He has a batting average of 27.39 and a bowling average of 30.37. His best bowling figures include taking 4 wickets for 12 runs in 4 overs. Furthermore, Coles has taken 32 catches in T20 matches.

Recalls for Jofra Archer and Saqib Mahmood
The 17-man squad includes the return of several key fast bowlers. Jofra Archer will lead the pace attack after continuing his comeback from long-term injuries. Saqib Mahmood from Lancashire is back in the squad for the first time since January 2025.
Other returning players include Sonny Baker and Jordan Cox. Both players made their Test debuts recently and have now earned spots in the white-ball squad. However, some familiar names will miss the series. Ben Duckett was left out of the squad entirely, while Brydon Carse and Jamie Overton are unavailable due to injuries sustained during the Indian Premier League.
Key Squad Changes and Injuries
Marcus North explained that England chose a larger 17-man squad to allow for player rotation. This is because the T20I series starts just two days after the scheduled end of the Test series against New Zealand. Six players in the T20I squad are also involved in the final Test match. Therefore, the coaching staff needs flexibility to manage the workloads of these multi-format players.
Brydon Carse is recovering from a wrist injury, and Jamie Overton is recovering from a thigh injury. But without them, younger bowlers like Josh Tongue and Luke Wood will have their opportunity to step up against the T20 World Cup champions.
