England Lions ended day two of the 2nd Unofficial Test at the Kent County Cricket Ground in Beckenham in a precarious position, reaching 134 for five in their second innings. They lead South Africa A by just 49 runs, with five wickets remaining and two full days still to play.
Jordan Hermann’s first-innings century was the defining contribution of the day, giving South Africa A a platform they never surrendered.
Hermann’s 103 Anchors South Africa A’s First Innings
South Africa A resumed day two on 73 for two, and Hermann, who came in overnight, continued to build his innings with authority. The right-hander was the cornerstone of the South Africa A batting effort, reaching his fifty with a pull off Rehan Ahmed before going on to complete a well-crafted century.
Hermann hit 103 as South Africa posted 278 in their first innings, giving them a lead of 85.
England’s bowlers did work their way through the middle and lower order. Eddie Jack and Henry Crocombe both took four wickets, but England were frustrated by a last-wicket stand of 55 between Dane Paterson and Codi Yusuf. Paterson, batting at number 11, hit an aggressive 33 before Rehan dismissed him. Yusuf remained unbeaten on 21.
Crocombe took three quick wickets after the lunch resumption, producing a delivery that bowled Fortuin middle stump for 32, then had Tiaan van Vuuren and Prenelan Subrayen both caught behind off successive deliveries. Despite those breakthroughs, South Africa A’s tail wagged and stretched their lead well beyond what England had hoped to contain.

England Lions’ Second Innings Wobble Under Pressure
Chasing a deficit of 85, England’s second innings began steadily but unravelled through the middle session. Van Vuuren had Ben McKinney caught for 15 at midwicket in the final over before tea, leaving England on 26 for one, still 59 behind.
Things got worse after the break. Dane Paterson got both Dan Mousley for 16, caught at second slip, and Asa Tribe, who nicked behind for 25. When Van Vuuren removed Ben Geddes, caught again by Zubayr Hamza at second slip, England were four down and still in arrears.
Ben Mayes then fell for 11, caught behind off Bjorn Fortuin, leaving England five wickets down with a slim lead.

Rehan and Ekansh Keep England Lions Alive at Stumps
With the innings in danger of collapsing entirely, Rehan Ahmed and Ekansh Singh steadied things. Rehan hit Fortuin back over his head for six to edge England in front and continued to play with confidence despite the pressure.
The not out batters at stumps are Rehan Ahmed on 44 and Ekansh Singh unbeaten on 15, the latter following on from his first-innings 95.
England’s lower order of Liam Patterson-White, Eddie Jack, Henry Crocombe, and Naavya Sharma are yet to bat. Whether they can extend the lead to something defendable on day three will determine how this match plays out. South Africa A, however, remain firmly in the driving seat.
