Delhi Capitals confirmed on April 23, 2026 that England leg-spin bowling allrounder Rehan Ahmed has joined the franchise as a replacement for his compatriot Ben Duckett for the remainder of IPL 2026.
Ahmed will join DC for INR 75 lakh, approximately £59,000. This marks his first appearance in the Indian Premier League, having previously played in the BBL and The Hundred. Duckett had withdrawn from the tournament in March, citing the need to manage his workload and be in the best possible place physically and mentally ahead of England’s home summer schedule.
Why Ben Duckett Left and What Follows for Him
Duckett was bought by Delhi Capitals at the IPL 2026 mega auction in December 2025 for Rs 2 crore. He had never played in the IPL before. When he pulled out in March, weeks before the season began, he cited his Test career priorities and the difficult Ashes series he had come through, where he struggled for form. His withdrawal was described as an extremely difficult decision, and he issued a public apology both to Delhi Capitals and to their supporters.
Under IPL regulations, a late withdrawal from a signed contract carries a two-year ban from the tournament. Duckett’s case is not isolated within the DC setup. His England teammate Harry Brook is already serving a similar ban after pulling out of his own deal with Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2025 season. Duckett’s ban, once formalised, would prevent him from featuring in the IPL until 2028.

Who Rehan Ahmed Is and What He Brings

Rehan Ahmed is 21 years old and made history in December 2022 when he became the youngest player to represent England in a Test match, debuting at 18 years and 126 days in Karachi. Since then he has played 5 Tests, 9 ODIs, and 13 T20Is for England, claiming 49 international wickets across all three formats.
In T20 cricket more broadly, his record across 97 matches shows 85 wickets at an economy rate of 8.13, with 1,071 runs scored at a strike rate of 125.70. His value to a team lies in both departments, a wrist-spinner who can deceive with his googly and a lower-order batter capable of making an impact in tight finishes. He impressed at the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup earlier this year, where he took 2 for 28 and contributed an unbeaten 19 from seven balls in a critical match situation against New Zealand.
He has been playing for Leicestershire in the County Championship ahead of this IPL stint and received an NOC from the England and Wales Cricket Board despite being centrally contracted. Claude Henderson, Leicestershire’s director of cricket, expressed full support for the move.
The path to Delhi Capitals was also helped by an existing commercial connection. Rehan had signed for Southern Brave in The Hundred, a team partly owned by the GMR Group, which also holds a 50 percent stake in Delhi Capitals. That shared ownership structure simplified the signing process considerably.
Rehan’s Fit in Delhi Capitals’ Spin-Heavy Attack
Delhi Capitals have almost unlimited options with spin within their squad. Captain Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Vipraj Nigam, as well as off-spinner Tripurana Vijay (Vijay’s third successive IPL), are already members of their squad. By adding Rehan to the fold as a fourth wrist-spinner to complement Kuldeep & Nigam, DC has added even more variety to their spin arsenal, while also allowing team management an opportunity to employ different variations of leg-spin depending on conditions or matchups against a specific opponent.
It appears DC’s management has been very methodical in waiting until the back end of April to choose a replacement; their strategy was to wait until early games were played, then determine where they perceived there was the greatest need for a replacement player. DC’s next match is on April 25th against Punjab Kings at Arun Jaitley Stadium, which would place Rehan in a great position to be in the IPL’s starting 11, assuming he gets his clearance.
