Welsh Fire captain Phil Salt led his team to a thrilling six-wicket victory over Southern Brave on 22 July 2026. The match took place at the Utilita Bowl in Southampton during the opening week of the new season.
Salt scored an unbeaten 47 runs to end a famous eight-match losing streak against the Brave. Welsh Fire successfully chased down a target of 136 runs. They scored 138 runs by losing 4 wickets with only two balls left in the game.
Welsh Fire Break the Southern Brave “Hoodoo”
Before this match, Welsh Fire had failed to beat Southern Brave in eight consecutive attempts. Many fans and experts called this a “hoodoo” or a mental block for the team. However, the new captain ensured the ninth meeting ended differently.
The win provides a perfect start for Welsh Fire in the 2026 competition. Last season, the team finished at the bottom of the league table. Consequently, this early win helps them build momentum under their new leadership and ownership structure.

Southern Brave Set a Competitive Target
Southern Brave won the toss but struggled to score quickly on a tacky surface that was difficult for batters. They lost their opening batters, Jamie Smith and Ben McKinney, for very low scores. Sam Cook dismissed Smith for just three runs, while Marco Jansen removed McKinney for four.
Despite the poor start, 18-year-old Thomas Rew rescued the innings. Playing in his first-ever Hundred match, Rew scored a flashy 41 runs from 30 balls. His innings included five fours and one six. David Miller also helped the team by scoring 44 runs from 35 balls. Miller struggled at first but finished strongly before being run out.

The Welsh Fire Bowlers’ Exceptional Bowling
The Welsh Fire bowlers played exceptionally. Marco Jansen was the standout performer. He took two wickets for just 17 runs. He successfully took the wickets of both McKinney and Rew just as they looked to score more runs.
The innings ended strangely for the Brave. England fast bowler Jofra Archer was run out after a major mix-up with David Miller. Archer tried to run for a single, but Miller sent him back. This confusion allowed Welsh Fire to easily remove Archer, leaving Southern Brave with a total of 135 runs by losing 7 wickets.

Phil Salt Anchors the Winning Chase
Welsh Fire began their chase with Matthew Short, who hit four early boundaries and scored 20 runs from 15 balls. After Short lost his wicket, Phil Salt played a very mature innings, rotating the strike rather than just hitting big shots.
He formed a strong partnership of 31 runs with Joe Root, who made 15. Later, Salt and Rachin Ravindra combined to put on a 49-run partnership. Ravindra scored 24 runs and praised Salt for the way he led the team during their time at the crease.
A Dramatic Final Over Finish
The game became very tense as it reached the final stages. Welsh Fire needed nine runs from the last five balls to win the match. Asa Tribe took the pressure off by hitting a four off the very first ball from Brave captain Chris Jordan.
With only four runs needed from three balls, Salt decided to finish the game himself. He hit a massive six over the mid-wicket boundary to seal the win with two balls to spare. Salt finished the match on 47 not out from 37 deliveries.
