Leicestershire moved firmly into control of their County Championship Division One match against Yorkshire at Grace Road, with centuries from Rehan Ahmed and Nick Kelly putting the home side in a commanding position after two days.
Bottom-of-the-table Leicestershire, chasing their first win since promotion to Division One, bowled out Yorkshire for 185 on day one before piling up 453 in their first innings. By the close of day two, Yorkshire had slipped to 32 for 2 in their second innings, still trailing by 236 runs.
Rehan and Kelly Build Match-Defining Partnership
Rehan Ahmed and Nick Kelly added 160 runs together for the fourth wicket, a stand that shifted the balance of the match firmly in Leicestershire’s favour. Rehan, England’s international allrounder, made 128 off 168 balls with 19 fours and a six before he was caught at cover off Matthew Revis, attempting to clear the infield. It was his seventh first-class century and his first against Division One opposition, a knock that is likely to keep him in contention for England’s next Test squad.
Kelly, the New Zealand left-hander, continued the momentum after Rehan’s dismissal. He brought up his first century in English county cricket, finishing with 121 off 199 balls, including 16 fours and two sixes. He struck Jack White for six during his innings before being trapped lbw by offspinner Dom Bess. The pair’s partnership came after Leicestershire had resumed day two on 177 for 3, with the overnight stand of 52 runs growing rapidly through the morning session, despite a 45-minute rain interruption.
Late Collapse Costs Leicestershire Bonus Points
After Kelly’s departure, Joey Evison added further runs in a stand worth 74 with Ben Green, taking Leicestershire past 400. Evison was eventually run out for 55 following a mix-up with Green, triggering a collapse in which the last four Leicestershire wickets fell for just five runs.

Spinners Dan Moriarty and Bess took two wickets apiece in that period, with Moriarty finishing with figures of 4 for 85. The collapse meant Leicestershire missed out on maximum batting bonus points, falling six runs short in the 110th over. Despite this, their total of 453 gave them a first-innings lead of 268 runs over Yorkshire.

Yorkshire Lose Early Wickets in Second Innings
Facing a substantial deficit, Yorkshire endured a difficult start to their second innings. Seamer Josh Davey struck twice in his fourth over, removing both openers in the same spell. William Luxton was caught at third slip, and Adam Lyth followed soon after, caught at leg slip. Yorkshire closed the day on 32 for 2 from 16 overs, with Sam Whiteman and James Wharton unbeaten at the crease, still 236 runs behind Leicestershire’s total.
Earlier in the match, Yorkshire’s innings had been built around a half-century from James Wharton, who scored 56, but the rest of the batting struggled against Leicestershire’s bowling attack. Ben Green took 3 for 27, while Alex Green and Rehan Ahmed also picked up wickets to help dismiss Yorkshire for 185 inside 55 overs.
With two days remaining at Grace Road, Leicestershire are well placed to push for victory, a result that would mark a turnaround in a season where they have lost five of their first seven matches without a win. Yorkshire face the task of batting out the remaining time or building a substantial total to avoid defeat.
