Yorkshire dominated the third day of their County Championship Division One match against Warwickshire at Scarborough’s North Marine Road Ground on Sunday, setting the visitors a 453-run victory target. Warwickshire closed on 44 for 1, still needing 409 runs to win heading into the final day.
The day belonged to Yorkshire’s middle order. Will Luxton, Jonny Bairstow, and George Hill all contributed half-centuries in the second innings as Yorkshire declared on 246 for 6, leaving Warwickshire a near-impossible task on a pitch showing increasing signs of uneven bounce and turn.
Yorkshire Build a Commanding Lead Through Luxton and Bairstow
Yorkshire began the day with Warwickshire on 225 for 7 in their first innings reply to the home side’s 469. Captain Jonny Bairstow chose not to enforce the follow-on after Yorkshire established a first-innings lead of 206.
Pakistan overseas bowler Hasan Ali took two of the remaining three wickets, bowling Keith Barker for 21 and trapping Ethan Bamber lbw. George Hill bowled Oliver Hannon-Dalby to wrap up the innings. Warwickshire captain Ed Barnard finished unbeaten on 83, a composed knock that included two sixes off Jack White.
Yorkshire’s second innings started poorly. Adam Lyth fell for four, bowled by Bamber after shouldering arms. The hosts then slipped to 79 for 4 at one stage, with Sam Whiteman, James Wharton, and Matthew Revis all dismissed cheaply. Manav Suthar and Hannon-Dalby shared three of those wickets between them.
Luxton, however, provided the innings with its spine. The opener reached his fifty off 76 balls and went on to score 69 before being caught at short leg off Beau Webster’s offspin. Luxton’s dismissal came with Yorkshire on 115 for 5. He had scored 167 in the first innings and was on course to become the first Yorkshire batter to hit two centuries in a Championship match at Scarborough — a record that has stood since Sussex’s Michael Yardy achieved it in 2011.
Hill and Bairstow Partnership Ends Warwickshire’s Hopes of a Fightback
Bairstow walked in and joined Hill to rebuild Yorkshire’s innings. What followed was a 119-run sixth-wicket stand that effectively put the match beyond Warwickshire’s reach.
Hill was the more aggressive of the two early on. He slog-swept Webster over deep midwicket for six and reverse swept him for four in the same over to bring up the milestone alongside Bairstow. Hill reached his fifty off 69 balls. Bairstow got there off the same number, adding to his 68 in the first innings.
Bairstow eventually fell for 62, caught behind off Bamber, with Yorkshire having built a lead well beyond 400. The declaration followed nine balls later, with Hill unbeaten on 65 off 88 balls. Dom Bess contributed a quick 10 not out at the close of the innings.

Warwickshire Lose Yates Early in Daunting Run Chase

Warwickshire had 15 overs to negotiate before stumps and lost opener Rob Yates in the 13th over. Yates, who scored 65 in the first innings, edged Hill low to first slip for 20. It was the only wicket to fall as Alex Davies finished unbeaten on 19 with night-watchman Ethan Bamber alongside him on one.
The pitch is not getting easier. With 409 runs still needed and one wicket already down, Warwickshire will need a record-breaking effort on the final day to avoid defeat. Yorkshire, with Hasan Ali, Jack White, Hill, and Dom Bess in their attack, hold every advantage heading into Monday’s play.
Yorkshire lead the points tally in this fixture with 8 points against Warwickshire’s 4.
