With a big gulp of breath, the 33-year-old Romanian Simona Halep announced her retirement from professional tennis after her crushing defeat in the first match of 2025.
Simona Halep Loses To Lucia Bronzetti
Fans might be unsure, but Simona Halep retires after losing the game against Lucia Bronzetti in the Transylvania Open. It was a straight loss whereby the tennis star couldn’t match the same form and effort.
The final reading was 6-1 and 6-1. This contest was over within 59 minutes, and she stated that she wasn’t in the proper form. Italy’s Lucia proved that it was time for Simona Halep to go.

Simona Halep announced her retirement amid loud applause from family, friends & fans and shared views on her professional journey. The former tennis world champion wasn’t sure of what that feeling was.
“Tonight, I don’t know if it’s joy or sadness; I think both feelings are present in me right now. But I am making the decision to retire with my soul,” the talented tennis player said.
“That’s why I wanted to be here today, in Cluj, to play in front of you and say goodbye on the tennis court, even if my performance wasn’t great.” said Simona with a small smile and teary eyes.
She further adds that Simona has to be realistic with her body. Since returning to court last year, she has been struggling with injuries. Only last month, Simona had to withdraw from Australian Open qualifying due to a bad knee injury and has been considering retiring since then.
The former grand slam champion also adds that she can’t reach the same heights now due to fitness, form, and other contributing factors.
Simona Halep Doping Controversy
The biggest blip in Simona Halep’s career will be the doping charge she faces. Halep tested positive for the banned substance roxadustat in the 2022 US Open, turning her career upside down.
Before doping charges, Simona was world number 1 for more than 64 weeks, which is massive for women at Wimbledon. The ban was imposed for 4 years in September 2023, which was later reversed to 9 months.
Simona, at the time, was training with Patrick Mouratoglou, who was also the former coach of Serena Williams. Halep claimed that she was taking the substance which her coach had advised.
The court didn’t listen to her plea and stated she was guilty in October 2022. She, however, never accepted using the drug.
