DAZN Highlights AI Judging as a Game-Changer for Boxing

DAZN highlights AI judging as a potential game-changer, promising fairer, more consistent boxing outcomes with less controversy.

AI judging in boxing could revolutionize the sport by ensuring more accurate, unbiased, and consistent scoring in every fight.

DAZN’s 2025 Goal: Make AI Judging Standard

DAZN’s 2025 goal to make AI judging a permanent fixture in boxing is a bold move that could knock the sport into the future. Boxing has long been marred by questionable decisions, with some fights going the distance only to see the wrong fighter get the nod.Β Β

It is a resolve by DAZN to have this technology honed and polished further so that it acts just like a well-oiled machine in scoring the fights. While it might need a bit of elbow grease to perfect, the AI coming out with 118-112 for Usyk proved it can get the right result when perhaps some traditional judges might have had a blind spot.

It holds the potential to be that game-changing moment this sport needs to remove the stain of controversial verdicts finally. It is not all plain sailing as yet, but should AI be able to iron out the wrinkles, soon enough, it could be the secret weapon that brings justice into the ring. This resolution is one DAZN could stick to: ensure boxing fans aren’t biting their nails over dubious calls.

AI Judge Scores Usyk’s Victory Unanimously

The rematch between the two Usyk vs. Fury offered pure delight, while the AI judge returned a unanimous victory for Oleksandr Usyk in a sport that was more often shadowed by controversy-laden decisions.Β

Although the traditional three judges perceived it as 116-112 for Usyk, the AI judge took it to the next step by scoring 118-112. This was no flash in the panβ€”Usyk’s busier work rate and relentless motor had the AI seeing things crystal clear. The AI’s take on the fight wasn’t a shot in the dark; it highlighted Usyk’s dominance while only giving Fury a few rounds.

While there’s room for refinement, the fact that AI judged Usyk’s victory without missing a beat shows technology could play a key role in keeping the sweet science fair. If AI continues to score with precision, it may well take its place as a permanent fixture in the ring.

Problems with Traditional Boxing Judging

Judging is a traditional sport, with questionable decisions often leaving fan after fan and each fighter scratching the other’s head, so to speak. In most sports, in an event where there is a very apparent winner, as every punch tells, the method of scoring tends to be seen as a gambling dice, significantly when judges raise points that leave people with a mouthful of questions.Β

Take, for instance, the infamous fight between O’Shaquie Foster and Robson Conceição. Foster outboxed Conceição and lost on a confusing split decision. It is results like these that have boxing fans pulling their hair out, trying to understand how the right result can get lost in translation.

Too often, boxing suffers from the fog of bias, inconsistency, and human error. The judges who will not always have their finger on the pulse can make calls that seem like they are out of left field. It is not at all uncommon for one fighter to dominate most of the rounds only to see the judges score the fight the other way, sometimes leaving more questions than answers as to the integrity of the process.

Controversial Decisions Spark Calls for Change

Questionable decisions in boxing are just about the constant thorn in its side, as they bring about uproars and leave fans incensed. Every time a fight concludes with a head-scratching scorecard, it’s like the sport takes two steps back.Β

The O’Shaquie Foster vs. Robson Conceição debacle was one such case where Foster dominated the fight, yet two judges saw it differently and gave the win to Conceição. It’s these types of decisions that set the boxing world ablaze, with many fans and boxers alike seeking change.

The truth is, that the scoring system in boxing has long served as a punching bag for criticism, and the pressure is mounting that something must be done. It’s hard for the sport to get past a long shadow cast when the right fighter doesn’t get the nod, and equally tough for the fans to swallow the bitter pill. Critics say the current system is outdated, with human error or bias often clouding the waters.

AI Judging Could Ensure Fair Outcomes

AI judging in boxing could finally be that shot in the arm the sport desperately needs to ensure fair outcomes. Controversial decisions have hung around the neck of the sport for years, leaving fans and fighters alike scratching their heads in dismay.Β

That is where AI might turn the tide. If AI were judging, human fallibility, bias, or blind spots would reduce drastically. AI doesn’t have a dog in the fight; it would score based on pure facts and, therefore give an impartial take on the action. That could be the game-changer that ensures the right fighter gets the win every single time without any shadow of controversy over the sport.

Current Limitations of AI in Boxing

While AI judging in boxing does hold a great deal of promise, it’s a work in progress, and one or two teething problems will doubtless still be ironed out. Groundbreaking, the tech certainly is; perfect it is not.Β

In the instance of the rematch between Usyk and Fury, although the correct victor, some fans thought AI gave a tad wide score of 118-112 for Usyk, which missed some expectations. This is yet another one of those challenges: it’s all in the fine-tuning so AI isn’t swinging for the fences, making calls way off base.

The other obstacle relates to the dataset. Artificial intelligence in the judging of fights relies on information fed into the system. As things are, the system might have difficulties with more subjective aspects of the sport, such as style or strategy.

Besides, there is also an issue with real-time analysis: for AI to keep the score live, it has to process at the speed of lightning, which is easier said than done. For now, AI judging is like a diamond in the rough, with plenty of polishing still ahead.

Positive Signs from AI’s First Fight

The initial rumblings of AI entering the boxing ring, namely in the Usyk-Fury rematch, have shown a very positive trend that may turn out to be a game-changing phenomenon for the sport. Still in the early days, the AI judge’s score of 118-112 for Usyk was nevertheless a glimpse of what could be: unbiased, consistent scoring.Β

Although a little wider than some would have wanted, the correct result came from the AI-a step in the right direction. AI has the potential to eliminate the murky waters of human error and bring clarity to decisions that have long been a thorn in the side of boxing.

What’s encouraging, though, is that the AI didn’t pull its decision out of thin air. It credited Usyk’s nonstop work rate and motor, proving that AI can track a fighter’s performance with precision.

The Future of AI in Boxing

While the future of AI in boxing is bright, it still has to overcome a few hurdles before it becomes a staple in the sport. The first test of AI judging in the Usyk-Fury rematch gave a glimpse into what might lie ahead for boxing fans.Β

Though far from perfect, the ability of the AI to award the correct winner showed it could be a game-changer over time. AI, if tuned right, would bring in the kind of objectivity that has been largely missing in boxing, which could be counted on to rule out controversies once and for all.

The potential for AI in boxing is enormous, and as the technology gets fine-tuned, it could take center stage, providing consistent, real-time analysis that traditional judges might miss. Capable of tracking every punch and assessing a fighter’s strategy, AI could help level the playing field, removing the fog of bias that often clouds human judgment.
