It wasn’t until the death of his coach and father that he harnessed that grief into energy and defeated the then-reigning champion for the welterweight (70-75 kg) title.

Two years ago, just before an important semifinal match at the National Games, he lost his coach and mentor, Dhananjaya Tiwary, in an accident.
During the competition in Bareilly, Nikhil defeated the defending champion Deepak in an exciting final by a 4-1 score. He ultimately got the welterweight title at Bareilly.
He honored his late coach by pushing through his grief and winning the gold.

After struggling in the 71 kg weight class the previous year, he made a fantastic return by focusing on his skillset and moving up to the 75 kg weight division.
The World Championships in September are Nikhil’s next goal. After rising through the amateur levels, he hopes to compete in the Olympics. Nikhil intends to switch to the 80kg class to meet Olympic requirements and prepare for the road ahead.
