Benavidez’s Long Arms Pose Challenge For Morrell, Says Andrade

Benavidez’s long arms pose

David Benavidez’s long arms could be the ultimate test for David Morrell when they face off on February 1st. Former opponent Demetrius Andrade highlights the challenges of Benavidez’s reach, which stifled his offense.  Benavidez’s long arms pose a significant challenge for his opponents.

Andrade Questions Morrell’s Reach Against Benavidez

Previous Fight Challenges

Demetrius Andrade doubts David Morrell’s ability to counter the reach of David Benavidez in their fight on February 1st.   While Morrell has a longer reach at 78 inches-four inches more than Benavidez’s 74 inches-Andrade has questioned whether the Cuban would be able to use this to his advantage.

Andrade had his issues with the size and reach disadvantage in his fight with Benavidez, saying that he felt overwhelmed by his opponent’s physicality. Andrade described Benavidez as looking like he weighed a lot more, almost like a light heavyweight vs. a middleweight. While Morrell is taller and has a longer reach, Andrade remains cagey, adding that the punches of Morrell can be a bit wild at times, which comes with the territory of inexperience.

He needs to adjust and set up cleaner, calculated shots if he’s going to have any success. While Morrell does have talent, as well as physical gifts, Andrade is less convinced he has the experience and skillset to overcome the reach and size of Benavidez in what could be a very competitive fight.

Impact of Benavidez’s Long Arms

One of the biggest gifts David Benavidez has ever had inside the ring is his long arms, as mentioned by Demetrius Andrade. Benavidez’s length and reach are 74 inches, which enables him to maintain distance with ease. Of course, it makes other boxers struggle to be inside his guard. The only thing that this bodily feature does is to make a fighter more tactical, as one sometimes has to bypass his reach in order to land an effective punch.

The difference in reach for Benavidez against Andrade was the biggest reason in his sixth-round victory over him. Andrade failed to land clean due to the manner in which Benavidez kept him away by using his long arms. With a size and reach differential, it put the middleweight Andrade out of place with the bigger physical specimen in Benavidez, who looked more like a light heavyweight or even cruiserweight.

Andrade’s Weight Class Transition

Demetrius Andrade’s rise in weight class has been a big factor in his career, especially regarding taking on fighters like David Benavidez.

Andrade’s first fight at 168 pounds came against the descent test of Demond Nicholson, as he worked his way into the new weight. But it was his fight with Benavidez later that year that exposed the real difficulties of the transition. Andrade was at a disadvantage against the physicality and size advantage of Benavidez, who was longer and stronger because of his youth. Andrade, accustomed to fighting at a lighter weight, was outmuscled and overpowered before ultimately losing by stoppage in the sixth round.

Morrell’s Physical Advantage

Reach Comparison

David Morrell comes into this fight on February 1st with one key physical advantage: his 78-inch reach, four inches longer than that of Benavidez, who has a 74-inch reach. That could make a big difference in this fight and give Morrell the potential to be the one in control of the distance and stay out of the reach of Benavidez.

However, Andrade pondered how much of that Morrell could capitalize on, though. While Morrell is imposing physically and quicker than most of Benavidez’s opponents, his tendency to throw wild punches cancels out his reach advantage. Precision will be key if Morrell is to take full advantage of his longer arms.

In a fight where both men possess comparable size and strength, the difference in reach for Morrell could be the decisive factor-if he can make the most of it with disciplined boxing and stay out of close-range exchanges where Benavidez’s power and defense are superior.

Size and Weight Dynamics

The size and weight dynamics going into the fight on February 1st between David Benavidez vs. David Morrell will be extremely important. Both fighters will bring impressive physical attributes to the ring, but it is ultimately how they utilize their size that may determine who wins.

Although he campaigns at 168 pounds, Benavidez’s frame often makes him look like a light heavyweight, giving him an edge in power and endurance.

On the other hand, David Morrell has almost the same height with Benavidez, reaching higher, and will have this fight closer to a majority of his previous fights. The fact that he fully can use his bigger reach may offset the physicality that Benavidez had presented. However, inexperience may prevent Morrell from capitalizing on such facts, according to what has been mentioned by Andrade.

The head-to-head fight of these two similarly-sized fighters again pits Morrell’s reach and athleticism against the proven strength and ability to impose one’s size in the ring Benavidez.

Experience vs. Talent

The fight between David Benavidez and David Morrell on February 1 pits experience against raw talent, as Benavidez, is an experienced campaigner who has had a pretty storied career, and Morrell is an up-and-coming star banking on raw talent and athleticism to make the most of his big chance.

Experience at an elite level gives David Benavidez the majority of the advantages. Having faced and overcome more veteran fighters like Demetrius Andrade, among others, he knows what it really means in high stake bouts.

Can Morrell Adapt to Benavidez’s Reach?

Morrell’s Speed and Power

Of course, one of the biggest weapons Morrell possesses is his speed and power. He presents an interesting style that can make life quite difficult for David Benavidez. With quicker hands than most of Benavidez’s previous challengers, Morrell can throw quick combinations and open up opportunities. The power was also a trademark of his, which enabled him to dominate and finish fights convincingly.

Against Benavidez, however, speed and power might not be enough. Toughness and chin are known attributes of Benavidez, who has been able to soak up many punches from powerful opponents. The key for Morrell will be putting that natural athleticism together with disciplined boxing to crack through the defense of Benavidez.

Tactical Adjustments Needed

For David Morrell to overcome David Benavidez on February 1st, strategic adaptability will be critical. Facing an opponent as seasoned and imposing as Benavidez requires more than raw talent.

First, Morrell needs to maximize his 78-inch reach by using a sharp and constant jab to disrupt Benavidez’s rhythm while keeping his distance from him. He will have to stay away from any close exchanges where the size and power of Benavidez can take over. He will circle the ring and be on the outside, which will make Benavidez take risks to close the gap in order to create some counters.

He will also have to work on his accuracy. As Demetrius Andrade pointed out, Benavidez has long arms and a solid defense.

Potential Outcomes

In the February 1st fight between David Benavidez and David Morrell, several intriguing possibilities exist that are informed by their relative strengths and weaknesses.

Another possibility is a Benavidez win due to his pressure and power. If he successfully enforces his nonstop, high-volume style, the expectation would be that he grinds down Morrell through the later rounds. Given the ability of Benavidez to take punches and dominate close inside, a stoppage or decision victory is possible.

On the other hand, the significant reach and speed advantage for Morrell provide him with the tools to outbox Benavidez if he can keep the distance, land clean, and precise shots. Control the range and avoid unnecessary exchanges, and Morrell has the potential to win the fight by decision or even stop Benavidez if he capitalizes on his aggressive openings.

A very competitive and evenly matched fight might go to a somewhat contentious decision. Judges could either favor the aggression and punch volume of Benavidez or the precision.
