Their relationship has always been based on respect for one another and a profound knowledge of kabaddi, whether it was when Sanjeev was coaching the Patna Pirates while Suresh was playing or when they were teammates at the Jaipur Pink Panthers.
Now, they’ve teamed up again. This time, to revive the Thalaivas and make a strong statement in the Pro Kabaddi League 2025.

A New Chapter for Tamil Thalaivas
Tamil Thalaivas haven’t had it easy in recent years. They’ve finished in the bottom quarter of the league table for two seasons straight. That’s a tough pill to swallow for any franchise. But the management has decided it’s time for a change.
Sanjeev Baliyan comes in as the new head coach. He’s one of the most successful coaches in PKL history, with two championship titles under his belt. Alongside him is Suresh Kumar, who is widely respected in Tamil Nadu’s kabaddi circles and brings a wealth of experience.
Speaking about the new role, Suresh admitted there’s pressure.
“Most people still remember me as a player. If things don’t go well, I’ll be answerable to many,” he said. “It’s both exciting and challenging.”
The duo is not just focused on coaching from the sidelines. They’re already laying the foundation for a stronger squad to take on the challenges of the Pro Kabaddi League 2025.
Earlier this month, Thalaivas retained three of their top players — Moein Shafaghi, Himanshu, and Sagar Rathee. But they also made a tough call by parting ways with Iranian defender Amir Bastami, who didn’t have a standout season last year.
Auction Strategy and Squad Planning
Everyone is watching to see how the Tamil Thalaivas will assemble their team for the Pro Kabaddi League 2025, as the player auction approaches. Sanjeev has stated clearly that they are not pursuing elite players mindlessly.
While planning for the auction, the retained players are already in action at the South All-India Kabaddi Tournament in Madurai. It’s a smart move. Players can practice matches during the competition, and coaches can evaluate players’ form and fitness before the Pro Kabaddi League 2025 begins.
But it’s not just about who’s already in the squad. The coaching duo is also eyeing areas that need strengthening, especially in the raiding department. Suresh pointed out the need for a strong right raider and hinted that this will be a key focus during the auction.
“If we can get the right mix of players, I’m confident we can build something strong for Pro Kabaddi League 2025,” he said.
