Carlos Alcaraz Reaches 2025 Japan Open Final

Tennis player celebrating happily on the court

I was courtside on Monday at Tokyo’s Ariake Tennis Forest Park when I saw Carlos Alcaraz storm into the 2025 Japan Open Final. The world No. 1 Spaniard looked a bit rusty early – his movement was limited at times – but he dug deep to beat Casper Ruud 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Losing the first set 3-6 briefly had me on edge, but then Alcaraz played like a coiled spring snapping into action. By the second set, he found his range: aggressive and inspired, he overwhelmed Ruud and flipped the match on its head.

Now he’ll meet Taylor Fritz in Tuesday’s Tokyo title match. Personally, I think this battle-tested 22-year-old champion is firing on all cylinders – if he plays with the same energy and smarts, the 2025 Japan Open Final could very well end in his favor.

Alcaraz Outlasts Ruud to Reach 2025 Japan Open Final

From the first rally, I felt the tension. Ruud, known for his heavy topspin, pressed hard in the opener and quickly snagged the first set.

Moreover, at one point, Alcaraz hesitated chasing a drop shot – clearly favoring a sore ankle – and I was genuinely worried. But then I noticed a spark: at 1-3 down in set two, he held serve emphatically and never looked back.

He dropped only 4 of 24 second-set service points, a sign he had steadied himself. When he fired an ace to break in the sixth game of set two, I thought to myself, “Here we go.” He played that set like a lion raging back to its feet.

By set three, Alcaraz moved much more freely – it was like watching a caged tiger finally unleashed. His forehand chewed up the court; his return game cut off Ruud’s angle shots.

After two hours and eight minutes, he had notched his 66th win of the season, a personal best. As I watched him jump and pump his fist, I knew he had booked his spot in the 2025 Japan Open Final.

“I just tried to play with joy again,” Alcaraz said after the match – and joy was exactly what I saw out there, a gritty champion fighting back into form.

Tokyo Final Showdown: Alcaraz vs Fritz in 2025 Japan Open Final

Now all eyes turn to Tuesday’s clash. The 2022 Tokyo champion will stand across the net. Fritz punched his ticket with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Jenson Brooksby, firing 13 aces to seal victory.

I expect this final to be a cannon duel: Fritz’s big serve and flat baseline power versus Alcaraz’s variety and fearless offense.

From my perspective, a few factors stand out:

  • Serve supremacy: Fritz’s serve is a missile. Hitting 13 aces in his semi showed he’s ready to unload again. If Alcaraz returns well early, it could shake Fritz.
  • Head-to-Head: Fritz beat Alcaraz 6-3, 6-2 recently at the Laver Cup. But Alcaraz won their previous three meetings (Wimbledon SF, Laver Cup doubles, Miami 23). I sense that Alcaraz remembers those wins and won’t shy away.
  • Tokyo experience: Fritz has history here – he won this title in 2022. Alcaraz is chasing his first Japan Open crown. The Tokyo crowd will be watching two hungry players; I think the stage lights might feel most intense for Fritz, since he’s expecting fireworks.

I’m excited. Both players have earned this final by battling week-long fatigue and pressure. Personally, I think Alcaraz’s amazing run this season (including two Grand Slams and 66 wins) has given him the confidence of a man on a mission.

Moreover, I imagine their rallies will be like heavyweight fighters trading blows – fast, rhythmic, and ultimately explosive. In my view, the final will hinge on who blinks first under the spotlight.

Similarly, I’m slightly leaning toward Alcaraz. He seems to feed off these moments and plays his best tennis when it matters most. In sum, Alcaraz’s comeback win over Ruud was dramatic and telling of his champion’s heart.

As a journalist who loves drama, I can’t wait to see the final chapter of this tournament. Will Alcaraz lift his first Tokyo trophy, or will Fritz’s power prevail? Either way, it will be a match for the ages.
