Lerone Murphy just took a massive leap forward in his UFC journey. The Manchester-born featherweight division remained undefeated after a well-executed victory over veteran Josh Emmett in a five-round bout at UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas.
The Murphy vs Emmett clash lived up to its billing, and the outcome left no doubt: Murphy is closing in on a title shot.
Murphy vs Emmett: A Tactical Masterclass in the Ring
Emmett has put an end to battles in a flash, thanks to his one-punch knockout skill. Murphy, however, came into the fight with a well-defined and methodical plan—and followed it.
Judges scored the contest 49-46, 48-47, and 48-47 in favor of Murphy, awarding him a unanimous decision. From start to finish, he used slick footwork, long-range striking, and solid defense to shut down Emmett’s heavy hands.
“I took a few shots on the gloves, really didn’t take anything clean,” Murphy said. “I knew he hit hard… For me, it was to stay safe and be good defensively.”
Murphy noted that if Emmett won a single round, it might’ve been due to a brief top position after a kick exchange.
But for the most part, the Brit was in control. “I thought I won four rounds very clearly,” he explained. “It was the exact game plan—pick him off at range, catch him on the way in.”

Still Unbeaten, Still Climbing
Lerone Murphy now has an outstanding 16-0-1 professional record after defeating Emmett in the recent bout. His eighth consecutive UFC victory and 16th overall in terms of fight, further establishes him as a formidable opponent in the featherweight class.
Murphy doesn’t care that only two of those victories were stoppages. His attention is still on results and consistency.
“We are simply pursuing their victories, finishing first, accumulating victories, and striving for that championship,” he said.
Murphy’s fighting IQ is what makes him noteworthy. He remained calm, took measured risks, and made smart decisions every round when up against a strong opponent like Emmett.
Brian Ortega Next? Murphy Has a Plan
After the Murphy vs Emmett fight, Lerone Murphy didn’t hesitate when asked who he wanted next. His answer: Brian Ortega.
Ortega is a seasoned contender and former two-time title challenger. Though he came up short against Max Holloway and Alexander Volkanovski, he’s still considered one of the most dangerous fighters at 145 pounds.
His most recent fight was a decision loss to Diego Lopes—who, notably, is now fighting for the vacant featherweight belt.
Murphy sees that path and wants to follow it. “Just a fight I’ve been looking at for a while,” he said about Ortega. “You see Diego Lopes go on to get a title shot after beating him, so I want to take a similar route.”
There’s another connection, too: both Murphy and Lopes hold wins over Dan Ige.
A fight between Murphy and Ortega would not only be exciting but could serve as a clear title eliminator.
