No More Bunny Hops: MCC Rule Change Set to Redefine Cricket Moments at the Boundary

MCC boundary catch rule

The MCC has made a big change in cricket by changing the rules about boundary-line catches. The new rule stops the fun flying juggling show that amazed fans and changed games.

From the famous catch by Suryakumar Yadav in the 2024 T20 World Cup Final to Michael Neser’s debated out in the Big Bash League, these moments have caused both amazement and anger. The new rule from the MCC is clear — fielders can only step outside the rope once, and they need to be back inside the boundary before they can catch the ball.

Yes, that’s true!  This isn’t just a small change; it’s something big that gives more control to the batter.

[REPORT] New MCC Boundary Catch Rule: What You Need to Know

The “double-tap dance” outside the ropes is officially over. Cricket’s lawmakers, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), have finally addressed the long-standing grey area around boundary catches with a revised law that favors clarity, and batters too.

Under the new rule, a fielder can only make one touch on the ball while airborne outside the field. To finish the catch, they must be back inside the boundary with both feet grounded. No more repeat taps mid-air while still out of bounds.

Why Did This Change Come Now?

According to reports, Michael Neser’s Big Bash League catch in 2023–24 pushed the debate into high gear. Though technically legal at the time, his multi-touch effort outside the boundary raised serious questions about fairness and sporting spirit. Moreover, the MCC took note.

The MCC has changed the law to make catches like this ‘bunny hop’ one from Michael Neser illegal. In short:

If the fielder’s first touch takes them outside the boundary, their *second* touch must take them back inside the field of play.

[WHAT’S HAPPENING] Relay Catches Also Face the Heat

The update doesn’t stop with solo efforts—relay catches are under the spotlight too.

Here’s what’s new:

  • The player assisting the catch must be inside the boundary.
  • The teammate receiving the throw must also be fully grounded within the field of play.

Previously, a fielder could leap or reach beyond the rope and still keep the play alive. But now, it’s clear — both fielders must be in full control, within the boundary, like two feet on a tightrope with no margin for error.

[TRENDING] Game-Changing Moments That Inspired This Rule

Remember Suryakumar Yadav’s magical boundary catch in the 2024 T20 World Cup Final? That gravity-defying effort played a massive role in India lifting the title.

Cricket lovers were torn – was it an art or an exploitation of the rulebook? The report also stated that such moments, while breathtaking, needed clearer boundaries — literally and figuratively.

Another storm hit during the Big Bash League, when Michael Neser’s juggling act got the batter dismissed. Though rule-abiding, the move sparked outrage for being too technical and not in the spirit of the game. The MCC, not one to ignore growing noise, stepped in.

[UPDATE] How This Rule Will Impact Cricket Going Forward

Strategically, this could reshape late-game fielding tactics. Expect fielders to hesitate more near the rope, knowing they only get one clean shot at the ball if they’re airborne outside.

In addition, relay catches might become rarer, or executed with even sharper precision. Batters may now enjoy a psychological edge, knowing such “boundary miracles” have tighter limits. It’s like clipping the wings of fielding eagles mid-flight — no more endless mid-air magic unless it’s rooted firmly in the rules.

Amit Mishra’s Commentary

As a writer and die-hard cricket lover: This change in the rule is new and needed for a long time. The good things? It brings back fairness between bat and ball, making sure that the fun doesn’t come at the cost of being fair.

Moreover, it gives points for good fielding instead of just fancy moves. But here’s the problem — will this take away cricket’s movie-like feel? The magic tricks in the air got a lot of people to watch. Clear is better than messy.

No matter if you love the old ways or seek excitement, one thing is sure: cricket has changed in a big way.
