Bangladesh has announced Litton Das as the new T20I captain ahead of their upcoming tours to the UAE and Pakistan. The 30-year-old wicketkeeper-batter takes over from Najmul Hossain Shanto, who stepped down from the role earlier this year due to a demanding schedule.
Litton brings leadership experience, having previously captained Bangladesh in one Test, seven ODIS, and four T20IS. His most recent leadership stint came during the T20I series against the West Indies, where he led the side to a clean sweep. This will be his first time serving as a full-time captain in any format.
Off-spinner Mahedi Hasan has been named vice-captain for the series. While Mahedi’s appointment is temporary, the team management sees him as a potential future leader.
BCB’s Vision and Leadership Strategy for the Future
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed that Litton Das will lead the team until the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup next year. BCB Cricket Operations Chairman Najmul Abedin emphasized that Litton’s experience played a key role in the decision, especially given the few senior players in the current setup. The board believes Litton can bring both stability and leadership to the side.
While there were discussions about Litton’s form, Abedin stated, “We believe he has the potential. If he can organize his game, he’ll be an asset to the team.” He also mentioned that the ODI and Test captaincy announcements would follow later, stressing the importance of appointing leaders who are available and committed beyond match days.

Meanwhile, Chief Selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain mentioned that Litton is likely to bat at number three in the T20 format, a position that demands both control and attacking ability. He said, “Litton is likely to bat at number three, a position that requires both control and attacking ability.”
Mahedi Hasan has been appointed vice-captain for this tour only, allowing the board time to assess his leadership qualities under Litton’s guidance. Hossain added, “Mahedi’s role as vice-captain is temporary for this tour, giving us time to evaluate his leadership potential.”
