ISL Put on Hold, AIFF Under Fire: Is This the Worst Year for Indian Football?

The Indian Super League (ISL), which is the main Indian football league in the country, has been officially put “on hold” just a few months before the start of the 2025–26 season. The news arrives even though the AIFF has a big plan called “Vision 2047,” which said there would be a steady 5-level football system by 2026.

What was supposed to be a great time for Indian football has turned into a mess with bad management, legal problems, and a big crisis. This article looks at everything — from FSDL’s big step back to AIFF’s problems inside — to see if 2025 is the worst year for Indian football so far.

[REPORT] The ISL Suspended: How Did It Come to This?

Just two years after Vision 2047 was announced with much fanfare, promising a five-level league structure by 2026, Indian football has taken an astonishing nosedive. In July 2025, Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), the Reliance-backed body that operates ISL, informed clubs that it was “impossible to plan” for the upcoming season.

Their reason? The current Master Rights Agreement with AIFF is set to expire mid-season, and with no renewal or clarity in sight, FSDL has decided to freeze all operations.

The shocking part? Everyone saw it coming. Negotiations had reportedly been stalled for months, with a new ownership structure being the key sticking point.

Yet the AIFF only formed a ‘negotiation committee’ in April — ironically, a month after the Supreme Court began hearings on AIFF’s very constitution. Now, with a verdict scheduled for July 18, all meaningful talks are frozen until a new administration possibly takes over.

 AIFF’s Leadership Under the Scanner

The crisis has placed AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey at the center of criticism. His tenure has been plagued with one controversy after another — from Igor Stimac’s bitter sacking and the messy ₹3.36 crore compensation drama, to appointing FC Goa coach Manolo Marquez as India’s national team coach (while he still held the Goa post).

If that wasn’t enough, the men’s national team currently has no full-time coach, and AIFF has responded with vague plans involving “world-class strikers teaching finishing” and laughable attempts to blame team failures on “patriotism” and “attitude”.

Meanwhile, the I-League — which AIFF runs without FSDL — isn’t in better shape either.

Churchill Brothers were awarded the 2024–25 title in a ceremony, only to be told weeks later that the decision was pending a ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland over player eligibility. One moment, champions; the next, courtroom defendants.

National Team in Limbo, Fans in Turmoil

In the aftermath of India’s loss to Hong Kong, Chaubey avoided addressing deeper issues and instead read match results off a paper, defended his tenure blandly, and launched into an unnecessary rant against Bhaichung Bhutia’s coaching academies. It’s hard to blame fans who now feel completely alienated.

From grassroots to elite, there’s no clarity. The Tamil Nadu FA elections were just annulled by the Madras High Court due to procedural violations.

The men’s national team has no roadmap. There’s no ISL schedule. And no one knows who’ll be in charge a month from now.

A System Collapsing From the Inside

Indian football today looks like a stack of cards falling down slowly. Every mistake in management weakens its base, making the goal of Vision 2047 seem more like a joke than a plan.

Many players, workers, and experts now see an unclear future. This is more than a football story — it’s a big problem that impacts jobs and the sense of who we are as a nation.

Amit Mishra’s Commentary

As a football journalist who has covered the Indian game for years, I’ve seen chaos before — but nothing this systemic. This isn’t just a bad month; this is Indian football eating itself from the inside out.

While fans still carry the flame, the administration seems hell-bent on extinguishing it. The game deserves better.

The players deserve clarity. And above all, the fans deserve respect.
