Mumbai City defeated Northeast United, and it is one of the finest football games in the Indian Super League (ISL). Although Northeast United came into the game with high expectations, Mumbai City was just too good to deny the victory.
Interestingly, this was the first loss for Northeast United after their series of 8 wins in the tournament. Even though Northeast did have their chance, they couldn’t capitalize on the win.
Mumbai City Late Season Momentum
It was one of the easier wins for Mumbai City. Although late in the tournament, they have picked up some form.
Even in the game against Northeast United, it was the unstoppable nature of Mumbai that forged the win. Peter Kretky will be mindful of what is coming for the Mumbai team.
Mumbai has 31 points and currently sits in the 4th position, but they have one more game. The late moment might create some magic, but teams like Bengaluru and Odisha might have the upper hand, to say the least.

Goal Scorers in Northeast United Vs. Mumbai City
The Shillong side had good chances near the box but couldn’t capitalize.
Meanwhile, Bipin Singh, running in red-hot form, scored the first goal in the 41st minute. The icing on the cake was Lallianzuala Chhangte.
Forty-seven minutes into the game, the skipper of Mumbai passed the ball to Hmingthanmawia Ralte and was shot right into the middle of the goal, bringing the game to their side.
Northeast United Missed Opportunities
Mumbai City defeated Northeast United mainly for their poor conversion rate. In the final third, Northeast created a beautiful chance through the duo of Macarton Nickson and Alaaeddine Ajaraie.
Nickson cleared a beautiful ball, but Ajaraie made a meal of it and headed it out of the post.
Alaaeddine did come back stronger and created an opportunity with Michel Zabaco. Sadly, the target was missed again.
Interestingly, Ajaraie again had a beautiful ball in the 26th minute, which was made up by Mohammed Ali but couldn’t provide the final touch.
Aajaraie was in the game all the time, creating an opportunity in the 28th minute for Nestor Albiach. Sadly, Nestor, too, couldn’t capitalize, and the highlanders were goalless for a very long time.
What’s Next For Mumbai City and Northeast United?
Both of the teams might have mixed emotions after the last game. Mumbai will be high on confidence, while Northeast United might ponder what went wrong.
But they need to get their focus back quickly. Mumbai City will play their next match against FC Goa on 12th February, while Northeast United will have their next against Jamshedpur FC on 13th February.
With the quest for the final four and the playoff coming closer, both teams should keep winning to make it into the final four and win the ISL cup.
