Uzbekistan Ends 13-Year Drought Against Iran

Uzbekistan are the first-ever winners of the CAFA Nations Cup after Khojiakbar Alijonov scored the winning goal in the 118th minute. With the help of Abbosbek Fayzullaev, the aim resulted in a 13 year competitive winless streak over Iran and a burst of celebrations in Tashkent.

The last, in the Olympic City Stadium on September 8, 2025, was a tense, tactical, game, and a one-moment stroke of genius.

Goal That Shook Tashkent: Alijonov’s Last-Gasp Strike

118’- Khojiakbar Alijonov (Uzbekistan)

  • Assist: Abbosbek Fayzullaev
  • Alijonov discovered a gap in the box following a crossed ball that had been deflected and then coolly completed past goalkeeper Payam Niazmand.
  • This objective made Uzbekistan achieve the historic first CAFA Nations Cup victory, providing the home supporters with an occasion to celebrate an achievement victory.

105’ – Penalty Miss Uzbekistan

  • Player: Eldor Shomurodov
  • Situation: Awarded after a foul on Oston Urunov, but Shomurodov’s shot sailed over the crossbar.
  • Impact: Kept Iran in contention and added to the drama that would carry into extra time.

Game-Changing Moments: Cards, VAR, and Subs.

5’ Red Card Iran

A foul by defender Aria Yousufi on Abbosbek Fayzullaev sent the midfielder off and left Iran with 10 men almost the whole match.

VAR Intervention

Khojiakbar Alijonov would have been sent off in extra time but the card was overruled and the player stayed on the field to score the decisive goal.

Replacements

Igor Sergeev and Oston Urunov were added in the second half and they added extra energy therefore breaking the tight defensive set up of Iran.

The game was marked with significant events that defined the result. The early red card of Iran automatically pushed them into a defensive position whereas Uzbekistan was not able to capitalize on the early opportunities, as Shomurodov missed the penalty.

The decisive factor also came in via VAR as it kept Alijonov in the field, and the latter was able to score the match-winning goal in extra time. The Uzbekistan strategic substitutions gave impetus to attack which ultimately came true.

Top Performer: Who Made the Difference.

Uzbekistan

The 58% possession, 12 shots (5 on target), and the ability to keep tactical restraint during extra time were controlled. Heroes in this genre were Fayzullaev on the basis of vision and pace, Oston Urunov on the basis of pressing and creativity, and Alijonov on the basis of finishing under pressure.

Iran

They had 7 shots (3 on target) even with a man down, with goalkeeper Payam Niazmand making several key saves. The resilience to pressure and the defensive structure of Iran was remarkable.

Man of the Match

Khojiakbar Alijonov, because of his goal that won the match and the calmness that he showed in the most serious situation in the match.

The strategy used by Uzbekistan was obvious: to control the ball, attack, and outtake the numbers of Iran.

Iran though demonstrated an unbelievable level of discipline and determination and proved hard to crack and Uzbekistan had to fight to secure every chance. The goal that achieved the victory emphasized the hardiness and the expertise of Uzbekistan to attack at the right moment.

CAFA Nations Cup- Minute-By-Minute DRAMA

  • 1’-15’: Iran starts aggressively, but Uzbekistan’s defense holds firm. Early fouls set the stage for tension.
  • 5’: Red card was issued to Aria Yousufi that shifts tactical balance. Iran then gets forced to defend with 10 men.
  • 20’-45’: Uzbekistan dominates the middle of the field; several crosses fail to find a target.
  • 46’-90’: Regular time ends 0-0. Uzbekistan has possession but fails to convert; Iran is dependent on the saves of Niazmand.
  • 105’: Shomurodov misses a crucial penalty. The deadlock remains.
  • 110’-118’: Extra-time drama continues. Substitutions by Uzbekistan provide fresh energy.
  • 118’: Alijonov scores the decisive goal; Uzbekistan wins 1-0.

Aftermath & What It Means: Uzbekistan’s Triumph, Iran’s Lessons

For Uzbekistan

Cheers first CAFA Nations Cup win in historic times; adds morale before 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Coach Timur Kapadze extols the strength, bravery and tactical savvy of the squad.

For Iran

The team has shown tactical discipline, defensive strength, and fighting spirit, in spite of the loss. Important things to learn to take into future competitions.

What’s Next ?

Uzbekistan to continue this success in continental competitions; Iran to reform and get ready for new qualifiers.

It is not only the trophy that Uzbekistan won, but a figurative victory of Central Asian football, a result of decades of work with the young generation and the training of the tactics. Although it is not encouraging, the performance of the Iran team reveals that the team is still competitive and in order and able to deliver under pressure.

The game emphasizes the importance of planning, calmness and replacing players in time, which can be used to characterize high stakes games.

Amit Mishra’s Take

When Uzbekistan lifted their first ever CAFA Nations Cup trophy it was nothing short of electrifying to watch. It was not a mere victory; it was a declaration- years of diligence, of strategy and of raw force. The goal of Alijonov at 118 minutes of the match did not only end the stalemate, but it ended a 13-year history of broken hearts against Iran and the stadium erupted with joy.

It was not merely the objective but the narrative of the objective: a poised Uzbekistan team, shrewd replacements and glimpses of brilliance in a difficult situation.

This game makes us remember why football wins the hearts of people all over the world- it is surprising, emotional and all too human. It is a historic moment to Uzbekistan and a night to be remembered forever among fans. The football of Central Asia has really come.
