Coach SM Arif Urges Crucial Rest to Rescue Indian Badminton from Slump

Coach Arif: Rest Can Boost Indian Badminton

Indian badminton has recently hit a rough patch, with top names including P.V. Sindhu, Lakshya Sen, and the Satwik–Chirag duo exiting early at the high-stakes Indonesian BWF World Tour event.

According to a report by Siasat.com, veteran coach and former chief national coach Syed Mohammed (S.M.) Arif—Padma Shri and Dronacharya awardee—warns that overplaying and a lack of adequate rest are wearing out athletes mentally and physically. He emphasizes that while skill isn’t lacking, Indian badminton players are falling short on stamina and consistency compared to global rivals.

Arif suggests giving athletes the “necessary rest” in between competitions, including explosive strength and recovery techniques into fitness training, and pushing national and local coaches to use modern coaching practices. He maintains his optimism, referring to this decline to be a “temporary setback” that can be resolved with improved training methods and more smart scheduling.

[REPORT] Too Many Tournaments, Not Enough Recovery

According to SM Arif, Indian badminton players are simply playing too much. He believes that our shuttlers are not getting enough rest between tournaments. This leads to mental and physical burnout.

He points out that while Indian badminton stars are highly skilled, modern badminton demands a lot more. Today’s game is faster, longer, and physically draining. Stamina, quick recovery, and consistent performance are now just as important as technique.

Unlike top players from countries like China, Japan, Indonesia, and Malaysia, Indian badminton shuttlers struggle to maintain their speed and energy throughout long matches. Continuous play without proper breaks makes this problem worse.

[UPDATE] Coaches Also Need to Evolve

SM Arif didn’t just talk about the players. He also urged Indian badminton coaches to update their methods.

Training methods used years ago may not be enough today. Global training standards have evolved. Players need periodized training programs that balance hard work with enough recovery time.

Arif believes that with some changes in coaching and better management of players’ schedules, Indian badminton can easily bounce back.

Here is SM Arif’s take:

Bigyan Samele’s Take

I feel SM Arif’s advice makes complete sense. In today’s sports world, rest and recovery are as important as practice. We often celebrate players for grinding nonstop, but that mindset can harm careers in the long run.

Look at other sports like tennis or football. Top athletes carefully plan their schedules to peak at the right tournaments. Indian badminton should do the same.

Our players have the talent to compete with the best. All they need is better support, smarter planning, and yes — a little more rest.
