Parents, Coaches Fight to Save Girls’ Field Hockey at TVUSD

Parents and coaches unite to save girls’ field hockey, against Temecula Valley Unified School District (TVUSD), as the district has announced its plans to phase out field hockey and add other sports such as girls’ flag football and girls’ beach volleyball.

With this decision, the parents and coaches of the players are actively fighting to save the girl’s field hockey program. Let’s take a closer look at why TVUSD reached this decision despite increasing criticism.

TVUSD’s Decision: Why Is Field Hockey Being Phased Out?

The Temecula Valley Unified School District recently stated that there will no longer be field hockey as a girls’ sport, citing that there is very good fiscal, transportation, and instructional justification for the decision to phase out field hockey and add other sports.

Similarly, the athletic administrators and principals from Chaparral High School, Great Oak High School, and Temecula Valley High School held meetings with the hockey coaches and teams, but some high schools, including Chaparral High School, have already planned to remove the field hockey team for the 2025/26 school year.

However, the CHS, GOHS, and TVHS Athletic Administrators and Principals have come out with some reasons to phase out this sport:

  • There is no field hockey league/conference in Riverside County/Inland Empire. Our Temecula teams must travel to Orange County to compete or have OC or San Diego teams travel to Temecula.
  • Transportation costs are high to travel to schools like Huntington Beach and Westminster and buses must leave early in the day to transport our teams that distance.
  • Lost instructional time is a concern when buses leave at 11 am for a 3:15 game.

The decision has left everyone crumbling, as one of the players’ fathers said, “As you can imagine, there are a lot of disappointed and distressed players, parents, coaches, and associated community members.”

He further added, “Apparently, it’s OK these days to eliminate programs indiscriminately without consultation or feedback, but these girls deserve better.”

The Community Move to Save Sport’s Future

Among many concerns raised by the parents and coaches, the negative decision to remove the sport could directly impact the children’s physical well-being. The community has stood against this decision of TVUSD, as the sport has significantly improved the social development of the youngsters.

Though many parents, players, and coaches planned on attending the board meeting held on Tuesday, the letter from TVUSD has asked all the concerned members to attend the special meeting on March 10, regarding the phase-out of the sport which stated:

“Dear Field Hockey Student-Athletes, Parents, and Coaches,

On behalf of the Temecula Valley Unified School District, we would like to invite you to attend an important meeting on Monday, March 10th, at 6:00 PM in the Performing Arts Center at Great Oak High School. Dr. Woods, TVUSD Superintendent and Dr. Anderson, TVUSD Board President will be present along with other district leaders to listen to your concerns, address any questions, and discuss the proposed plan to phase out the field hockey program within the Temecula Valley Unified School District over the next few years. Administrators from CHS, GOHS, and TVHS will also be present.

This will be the opportunity for all the individuals who care about the sport to present their voices regarding this issue and engage in meaningful conversation. We encourage you all to attend this meeting.

We look forward to seeing you there.”

Overall Reflection

With this shocking decision, emotions have arisen among the players and parents to launch a campaign to save the program, as they have argued that removing such sports will deprive the girls of the opportunity for community involvement.

Do you think the girls’ field hockey will remain part of Temecula Valley Unified School District’s girls’ sport? Let us know.
