Jose Aldo Quits MMA After Controversial Loss: ‘I Can’t Do This Anymore’

Jose Aldo retirement

One of MMA’s greatest warriors has laid down his gloves once again. After a hard-fought and controversial loss at UFC 315, Jose Aldo has announced his retirement.

The former featherweight king, known for his speed and knockouts, says he no longer has the strength to keep going. This time, it feels like the end of an era.

Jose Aldo Retires After UFC 315 Loss: “I Can’t Do This Anymore”

After decades of legendary battles inside the Octagon, Jose Aldo has decided to walk away from the sport once again. After a contentious loss to Aiemann Zahabi via unanimous decision at UFC 315 in Montreal, the former featherweight champion and UFC Hall of Famer declared his retirement.

At 38 years old, Aldo admitted in a tearful post-fight interview that he no longer has the fight left in him — emotionally or physically through an interpreter. This isn’t the first Jose Aldo retirement, but this time, it feels final.

A Gritty Fight Ends in Controversy

Aldo came into UFC 315 with heart and hope, even though the odds were stacked against him. Aldo landed some good shots in their lively fight, including his signature knee and a massive right hand in the third round that temporarily dazed Zahabi.

It was an early sample of the class that has been savored by fans throughout the years.

Zahabi came back strong and took advantage of Aldo’s seemingly waning energy. He fought back with a barrage of piercing blows and dominated the rest of the battle.  When the judges announced a unanimous 29-28 decision in Zahabi’s favor, the MMA world was divided.

Many fighters and fans were quick to call out what they believed was a bad decision.

UFC lightweight contender Renato Moicano didn’t hold back, calling it “one of the worst decisions of the sport” and a “f—ing robbery.”

Strawweight fighter Angela Hill posted “HOW?!” on social media, echoing the frustration of many viewers.

Even veteran fighter Quinton “Rampage” Jackson referred to the ruling as a “bad call.”

The result immediately sparked renewed discussion around Jose Aldo’s retirement— especially given the effort he showed in spite of the outcome.

Why Does Aldo Say This Is Truly the End?

Following the fight, Aldo opened up about what he’d been dealing with behind the scenes. He revealed that he came into the bout carrying multiple injuries — including a muscle tear in his arm, abdominal issues from repeated kicks, and even a viral infection.

Despite medical advice to pull out, Aldo chose to fight, knowing in his heart that this might be his last dance in the Octagon.

“This fight was hard,” Aldo said. “I don’t want to go into war all the time and go through all this. I just don’t have it in my heart anymore.”

This heartfelt admission gave clarity to what Jose Aldo’s retirement really means this time: not just a pause, but a full stop.

Aldo’s words hit hard for fans who’ve watched him evolve from a fierce WEC champion to a UFC icon. His record stands at 32 wins and 10 losses, with 17 victories by knockout. He was the first UFC featherweight champion, defending his title seven times — a record that still stands today.

His reign from 2009 to 2015 set the gold standard in the featherweight division. However, many still remember the shocking 13-second knockout loss to Conor McGregor in 2015 — a moment that changed the course of Aldo’s career and led to his first retirement in 2022.

Even with the ups and downs, Aldo’s legacy is secure. His impact on the sport will last for centuries, and in 2023, he was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.

Jose Aldo’s second retirement puts an end to a career that has influenced the history of mixed martial arts.
