Firenze’s Escape from Relegation
Firenze was able to avoid relegation as the match came down to a single point to secure their performance in the Italian first division in a five-set thriller against Bergamo.
The do-or-die battle against Bergamo took an epic third-set comeback (30-28), and they were able to save two match points.
From the moment the game started, Firenze had the intention of not backing up and putting down the competitive fight. They were able to deliver an outstanding victory of 3-1 through aggressive attacks and solid defense.
The key player whose performance contributed to Firenze’s survival was Malual, who is considered an aggressive outside hitter and can play from both offense and defense.
The team came back from two sets down to beat Bergamo with 3-2 (23-25, 21-25, 30-28, 25-18, 15-13) on the board.
Talking about the match, Firenze’s setter, Illaria Battistoni, said, “We’re happy now. We never gave up, and that was exactly how we managed to avoid relegation today. We had a lot of strength to react, and I’m very proud of the team. It was a tough season; we were in a really difficult spot, but we gave everything we had, and now we need to celebrate.”
Milano Overtakes Scandicci for Second Place
Milano, who will have the home court advantage in the playoffs until the semifinals, finished in the second position in the regular season as they went off by scoring 60 points and passed Scandicci.
The tides took a turn when Milano topped Chieri with 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-20, 25-17) while Scandicci lost to Novara with 3-1 (25-20, 16-25, 25-22, 25-15), that too in front of their home fans.
Milano’s middle blocker, Anna Danesi, said, “We’re happy with this victory because we needed all three points to have a chance of moving up to second place. But our performance in the second set wasn’t great, we need to learn to be more consistent in some moments. I’m confident that’s going to change in the playoffs.”
With this, Milano is set to play with a lower-ranked opponent in the playoffs and is looking forward to carrying the same energy and momentum.
Conegliano’s Historic Season
The defending champions and top team in the Italian league, Conegliano, made history by finishing off a regular season with an undefeated 26 victories and 77 points.
With a victory over Bartoccini-MC Restauri Perugia on Saturday, the record was written in books during their final regular season match, where they scored 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-19) points, respectively.
The backup middle blocker said after setting the record, “It was great that I got to play this match in front of our home fans. We were coming from a difficult week, in which some of our players had to deal with issues, but still managed to accomplish our goal and end our campaign undefeated. We won’t celebrate now, though, as the hardest part of the season is right in front of us with the playoffs in the Italian League and the CEV Champions League, and we want to be on the court on the last day, so we have to keep working.”
The 26th win of the season was not only something to look out for Conegliano as they also marked their position as one of the most dominant teams in Serie A1.
